School me on DSC and DCT

I know. I still get mixed up. And the manual is utter rubbish. The old E85 was so much simpler. Hold the button down for a few seconds, boom, all off. Or at least that's how I understood it.

In simpleton's talk, on the 35is, how and what are the stages from all on to all off?

Thanks,

Marc

BMW pulled these videos when they stopped selling the E89, fortunately i saved them.

Keep in mind BMW terminology, when they give you something, they are actually taking something away.

Cant help you on the E89 but anyone with a E85 might find the following official BMW notes helpful in at least understanding how it is supposed to work : Unfortunately it seems I cannot add a .pdf so here is a link :

E85 Driving Dynamics Systems. pdf

hope someone finds it useful

I've seen this a few times before and still don't understand that if you put it in Sport+ mode and want to turn off the traction control altogether via the DTC button (for instance if you were on the track) then the car goes into comfort mode :o - WHY?

Simple grasshopper..

You can’t fully disable stability control ..aka DSC..

When you disable traction control it (DSC 80 unit), thinks you are stuck in snow and sand so puts you in a good tractive mode aka comfort whilst inhibiting stabilty / traction control..when you go above about 30 mph it then disables traction control..

If you want relaxed stability press sports + ..that’s the least interruptive option

You guys are giving me far too much brain credit. I need far more simpleton than that.

Oh dear..

So very simple..

Comfort mode..steering slower to inputs, auto box shifts up and down at lower rpms for fuel economy / noise reasons, throttle response slow

Sports mode..steering input quickened, auto box shifts up higher rpm, throttle response quicker

Sports+ mode over sports mode..stability control relaxed, auto box hangs onto upshifts if in in manual mode

There are I think some changes to brake management but not sure without a good look..

If you have EDC (mostly 35is) then damping rates stiffened up with Sports modes

If you have ASC (N20 only) then brum brum sounds louder..

I found turning DSC off the most appropriate setting in the E85 for undertaking the most perfect doughnuts when in snow.

P, generous, thanks, but could you try in terms of _____ => _____? Simple-simple? Thanks again.

Pbondar - great detailed info!

Marcoose - to simplify:

- DSC is the default mode and DTC is off.
- DTC is a subset of DSC. DTC allows for some wheel spin. DTC is activated when in Sport+ mode OR when the OFF button is briefly pressed (above the Sport rocker switch). Icon with car and tire skids is on.
- If you want to turn off DSC completely, press and hold the OFF button for about 5 seconds. Icon with car and tire skids is on. This is the mode to use if you want to spin your tires, burnouts, drifting, etc. Turning off DSC completely also kicks you out of Sport or Sport+ modes - turns off all these electronic driving aids.

Practical Applications:
- Skidpad, drifting, burnouts: DSC off completely
- Autocross, track, drag strip: Sport+

Still think it's daft you can't have DSC off completely in sport mode. If I'm going to a hooligan and vapourise my back tyres I'd rather do it with good throttle and steering response dammit!
Saying that having a less sensitive throttle in the snow probably helped me control drifts better so swings and round abouts I guess.
Would rather have a choice though.

Per [ref]Rucky[/ref] link shared above the infoguide references the following button, but i cant see what this actually does... can anyone enlighten me?

The post was reference E89..if you post it in the E85 section someone maybe more capable of answering your question?

If they enabled this i think the first time someone lost control & totalled their car/passengers etc Bmw would get sued for allowing safety systems to be turned off to easily!

Agreed. The electronics programmers have to presume that everyone is stupid. The Lowest Common Denominator effect; happening more and more. Otherwise "lane keeping assist", "radar; distance keeping cruise control" and "stop and have a cup of coffee" functions on modern cars would never have been invented, or implimented.

On the E85, that #2 button is to reset the tyre pressure reader to the current pressure. If the old noggin remembers correctly, the recommended cold tyre pressures were 36 front, 38 rear. Optimally, you set those cold pressures, hold the button down until a coloured symbol pops up in the cluster, and continue to hold down until the colour changes. Then release the button, drive, in a few minutes the symbol turns off, and Bob's your uncle. If one or more tyre pressure drops below the pre-programmed optimum level, the cluster symbol turns on with a warning beep.

The DSC button has two levels. One push turns 'some stuff' off, a long hold turns everything off. The E85 (at least mine) doesn't have a computerised diff, so you don't miss on anything by turning everything off. The E89 35is has a computerised diff, and presumably you don't want everything off. I reckon if it had a proper LSD, then it'd make sense to turn everything off.
