Hi All,

Thought I would say hi, we're looking to join the z4 family soon were in the BMW family with a 2001 330ci m-sport but looking to add a BMW convertable to the family, no strangers to the joys of topless motoring as it will be a big brother for our S1 Elise, but will need to sell our unmolested Peugeot 106gti to help finance the purchase, looking forward the hunt and following shinanigans :thumbsup
This is our modest fleet but love everyone of them!

I'm selling mine and possibly going back to e46's

@Smartbear - certainly a selocer :D

Thanks all love my elise.. 8) , some off the fleet will be going, looking to sell the 106 gti first, then the E46 as we have got an bad want for an Audi S1 but can't do that until next year.

But I want to stay in BMW land so as for the Z4 the budget is tight at 5-6k so looking like a pre faceliftbut hoping to get a 3.0L for that, E46 has the M54 and I very familiar working on that lump ( cooling system, new ccv etc etc, rad, control arms and track rod ends so it's a pretty sorted car. so not worried about getting my hand dirty, look after all current cars and have the BMW software which was a god send for the E46 when the DSC lights came on!

Can anyone advise on where to go for buying guides etc and good places to look for Z4's, been looking on Auto trader /piston heads but not many around in 3ltr not adverse to the 2.5l is there much difference in performance?

Cheers

beware if buying a 2.5 as there are a couple of different engine outputs with the post 06 facelift si model being the most potent at 218hp.
Best buy the 3litre really :P

And it's hello from Him.

(sorry, couldn't resist).

Loving the E46 mate ... still miss my old 330 despite having the hellrot coupe. Good luck with your search :)

Welcome OP - nice fleet you have there!

3 litre may be the way to go, but I doubt there would be a noticeable difference between a 2.5Si facelift with 218bhp and a 3 litre pre-facelift with 231bhp!

Mind you I would personally go for the 3 litre pre-facelift in that situation as the M54 engine seems to be a better option for lower running costs, especially as you have some hands-on experience with those.

The facelift N52 engine is fantastic and can reportedly do high mileages, but it has a few issues that can be expensive - my Ruby Black needed a new electric water pump and an OEM one was £500 (before fitting). The thermostat was another £100, so eye-watering bill by the time it was fitted!

By comparison my current daily is a 325ti Compact with an M54 engine, and I got a complete cooling system refresh including labour for just over £400!

As an aside I might be interested in your 330Ci if it is a facelift, and depending on spec - could you PM me some details?

Anyway I hope you find a Z4 that you like - while undoubtedly not as focused as a Lotus, they are great cars!

Well we found one, wheels need a serious refurbished, need to sort window regulator ( any how to on doing that) but othewise.
We got from someone who bought it x demo all toys bar satnav/cruise control 2004 3i, Has sports seats and some dsp stereo that sound pretty good! Wondering if I can get an aux in fitted to it. And Bluetooth phone thing is.. a nightmare connects to phone but when I call someone goes to the phone.. love it sterling grey. Drives really nice engine is strong with 89k full dealer history.
Happy days.. just need to sort her wheels out!

needs a little TLC but over drives well interior is spotless looks new.

M54 engine is the way to go who wants to be replacing water pumps on N52 engines at £400 when M54 meyle water pump is £30. I just sold my 3.0i on Friday and bought my 4th e46 330ci I will buy another z4 next year hopefully grey too to match my grey e46. Its good you can work on these yourself as many z4 parts are stupidly over priced compared with e46. Eg. last week my wiper mechanism broke I looked for a used one could only find 1 at £130 looked at e46 ones and they were £20+ ended up using my engineering spanner monkey skills and popped a washer on top of ball joint and welded it back together for free. I've been on track a few times this year in my z4 and those lotus elise go well and sound good as well for a small engine. Id like to buy one of them for sure but they aint cheap even on old S reg plate ones. That lotus exige is just car porn even better.
What they like to run and maintain? parts expensive etc

Elises are cheap.. mines an S1 111s so has close ratio gearbox, rover vvc lump 143bhp (mines 150) only 750ish kg. Engine parts are cheap it's a rover 4 pot, everyone bangs on about head gaskets, it happens, mine wrapped a little so got a mobile guy out ( mgroversolutions) £35 to sort.
Full tank is something like £35-£40 quid tyres are cheap, there light in the brakes too. Still not to shabby on the performance front by today's standards, 0-60 5.3secs, it can hold its own when out with brother inlaws in their 996 and 1980s 911
You can out brake/corner many things but most of all its just a massive hoot to drive so engaging.

Do loads of work self very very easy to maintain you just have to keep on top of them, biggest ballache is removing undertray to change oil.
