SatNav Android integration - interim project update

Thanks Steve,

I am aiming to get it all done by 9th December at the latest as I am doing a trackday at Brands, so it would be good to get it running as a track / data logger for the day.

I have a couple of special additional features I am working on specifically for track days, which should be the icing on the cake - but I'm not going to share them just yet as I have a few technical difficulties to overcome.

At some point I am going to have to take the plunge and start cutting the dashboard away... that bit makes me nervous.

Genuinely impressive work sir. Really engaging video too and I know my standard nav will feel even clunkier now I've seen this! Cant wait to read the official how-to :thumbsup:

1 question. How have you interfaced music/sound from the Huwaei to the BMW speakers. Would love to see a video of this in action when you get a chance Dan.

I already have a Dice Mediabridge installed. This has a Bluetooth A2DP streaming capability, so it streams the audio over BT (which is better quality than using the 3.5mm jack). It would work with the audio jack, it would also work as a USB storage for MP3's. I believe it should also be possible to connect it over the cars bus system, but haven't looked into this greatly.

The nice thing about using a2dp, is that it works with the steering wheel buttons to skip tracks.

Glad you enjoyed the video. Hope to have it finished soon, just waiting on a few Arduino bits to arrive, and then I can make a start on programming the motors behaviour.

Would the controls work for music players such as Spotify do you know? The great thing about this is, you could drive up to your house, it connects to the wifi and updates your music collection automatically. Do you have a PAYG sim in it for data while driving? (Traffic, updates etc)

Yes, the controls would work with Spotify. It's a question of whether the app supports the commands or not, and I believe Spotify does.

When it's done, I am probably going to simply get an additional sim-only contract. I can use the same tasker application to set up a call divert from my usual phone to the Z4 number every time I get in the car, and remove the divert when I leave. If I permanently block the caller ID, I can use it to dial people without them getting confused and thinking I have a new number.

TBH, I talk a lot on the phone in my daily car, but not in the Z - so that should suffice.
 
Fantastic work looks really good and the functionality of the tablet is brilliant for the car. Great work very impressive !
 
Sorry to bring back an old thread. Any updates to this project?? Seemed to show huge potential and then....nothing.

Hi guys.

How could you get that display? I'm in Europe, and seems pretty f***ing expensive to get one.
Anyway I'm an electrical engineer so I could easily hook up everything together (even wheel buttons, parking sensors, etc), but the main thing is missing, the display.

Anyone of you has a good source of that by any chance? :)
