Sat Nav??!!

Hey guys,

Still looking at Z4 Ms, both R and C as I can't make my mind up as to which I would like to own. Coupe for the looks and Roadster for the occasional blast with the roof down on a nice day.

Thing is, I'm not sure abou the Nav option. I have read on here that going for a car with the Nav fitted will make it easier to sell on eventually but does it really make that much difference? If I'm honest, I actually prefer the way the way the dash sweeps across the cockpit unspoilt by the pop up nav. All the cars I have seen without nav I have dismissed really.

Does the Nav screen also double as a Tv like a e46 screen or is it purely a nav display? I'm wondering if it's possible to retro fit a nav system or fit a motorised pop out/up single din screen in place of the current stereo.

Anyway, cheers in advance for your thoughts.

The nav will double as TV if you have the tuner, or retrofit it. There are plenty posts on here of people who have retrofitted the nav. Fitting a single DIN with pop-out screen is another good option.

My thoughts - nav was/is vital on cars up to say 2 years old, where condition and mileage is very much the same therefore equipment levels determine the desirability. Seems to be more important on the coupe than the roadster.

Now, as a lot of the ///M cars are now getting on for 3-4 years old I think that condition and mileage becomes more important. The nav has been superseded twice now (E90 i-drive and then latest system as fitted in the E89) so by the time you come to sell it will probably be 3 generations out of date.

Nav cars will always be worth more than non-nav cars (either price or ease of resale or both) but if you pay less in the first place, then you can expect less when you come to sell it. 3 years ago when I looked for an ///M I wouldn't have touched one without nav, but I think differently now.

Cheers for the rapid responses guys. Geeman, thanks for the link. That looks like a scary mod to carry out!! I think a pop out single din would more suit my abilities!!

Wondermike, you make some good points there. A great condition without nav trumps a poor condition with!! Is it expensive to keep the maps up to date?

It's a bit stupid me thinkin about the resale already without even owning the car yet!! Still looking, theres not a great deal of choice around Edinburgh!

I bought a Z4MC back in March and ended up with one with satnav. The main reason I went for it in the end was because it made the control of things like the DSP stereo, trip computer etc much easier. I also wanted to fit an intravee (not got round to it yet) for which I assume the large screen is a bonus.

I agree that it looks rubbish on the dash and the satnav itself is much worse than a £99 tomtom.

Not sure about long term re-sale values as I plan to keep mine for quite some time. It might even be the case of non-nav versions being preferred as the cars get to 10 years old or so - I can imagine that the satnav will be seen as positively stone age by then.

I retrofitted the first SatNav on my car years ago, and the satnav screen is not just for satnav - it is also the monitor for Radio stations, Phone calls / contact list, extra board computer functions and iPod browser (if additional hardware fitted) and TV (again if additional hardware fitted).

Regarding the value of it - very difficult to ascertain, but just lets put it this way - all the M models that have not sold at all, none of those had satnav. May be coincidence of course, but I think it makes a car saleable as when you buy a top model car - you expect those toys I suppose.

I didnt go out to buy my z4 roadster with sat nav, just that the one i did buy had one fitted

In hindsight im glad of the integrated satnav, as im not keen to phones and tomtoms hanging off the dashboard and a multitude of wires sprouting from the cigarette lighter + as survivalist mentioned its much easier to acess DSP etc.

Maps - mine came with a 2005 disc - i contacted a BMW dealer for a 2010 but it came in at £100+ So i did some google trawling and picked up a 2010 +v32 firmware for £35 and had no problems with it.

One question I did have was how different/modern the latest firmware is. The units looks identical to the one in the current (LCI?) 1-Series, but a friend has one and it seems much better, nicer interface and you can play mp3 files off the DVD drive.

Well, my thoughts have 180'd again and I know want one with the Nav. I always use my tom tom so I wasnt fussed about the bmw system but if it controls ipods and phones then its a must.

What is an Intravee??

The nearest MC to me for sale is in a BMW showroom. red, fully loaded, 58 with 17k miles for 28K. Seems very steep!! Especially when there is a 57 MC in a garage called Silverlink cars for 23k with similar mileage!!

(One thing that really annoys me is seeing people with Tom Toms etc stuck on their windows on their daily commute to work! Have they got the memory of a goldfish??? :x)

Probably using the Traffic service...

Though if they do a journey often enough they should know where the snarl ups are

pvr will explain - or correct me...

allows direct connection of you iPod and allows control through the steering controls of your iPod...

I just put mine on random...

Was that the 3.0C or the MC you went for? I've been looking local for an M for a while now and have only seen the one by the airport and also a roadster I drove at Deutschmarque in Edinburgh. :headbang:

That does look very nice!! Thing is, I'm worried that I will wish I went for a Coupe if I buy the Roadster. Mind you, when the sun came by Id wish I had a Roadster if I bought a Coupe haha.
