Sat Nav

Hi all,

I have the BMW sat nav installed in my 53 Z4 3.0 and was wondering how i stand with updating the firmward and/or the CD to the latest maps (currently has 2003 version)

I guess there is the dealer option (havent dared to check price yet) so was wondering what everyone else has done for upgrades?

Rich

thanks Pvr, but does this include a firmware update? or the discs are fully backward compatible?

Hi Rich,

www.xoutpost.com contains some useful information (though you have to hunt for it a bit). In short you can download the latest OS / firmware (V32), burn it to a CD and install it yourself.

For maps it is either buy from a dealer, buy from ebay or download a copy (torrent), but of course this forum doesn't encourage that.

Good luck!

Firmware can indeed be downloaded and being as it is not for sale, I don't think there is a problem with that.

Maps should only be purchased as copied maps "can" cause the system to lock up frequently.

I'm not one to use torrents or newsgroups

I'll have a scan over xoutpost tonight

Thanks

Just checked out xoutpost and found a guy who will update the firmware and also provide 2010 map disk all in for £50 - he has decent feedback on both the forum and ebay so worth a punt

Link removed by mod

I'll probably get it done over the weekend and feedback if anyone is interested

As long as you know it is not legal software you will be getting ...

the way i see it i handed over £200 last week to bmw to tell me i had water in a sensor and the fix was to leave it to dry out overnight - this will help to balance the cost/pain :driving:

If you go down the 'dubious' route, make sure you use DVD-R DL disks as they work best  not that I'd know, just speculating on the age of the DVD drive and the technology at that time etc...

Sorry but I cannot for the life of me understand why you would contemplate paying someone for an illegal copy of software when you can get a genuine disk for £99 form the dealer. As for the OS it's free and nobody cares if you download and install that.

Remember you've been warned that the illegal copies DO sometime screw up the DVD drive and that will cost you dearly if it happens. Of course I'm sure there are good illegal copies around but not for this forum discussion so no feedback or links - please !!

Out of interest, I've had a loook around the xoutpost site from the link above - NOT for an illegal map DVD, but for the free OS update.
There are loads of posts on there, but the jargon can be a bit confusing.

I have the MK4 Sat Nav but :-

a) How do I tell what firmware version I have
b) If it's free and LEGAL, can someone give me a link to where I can get the firmware update ?

Again - only if it's LEGAL !

Thanks

No worries -

PS if you see a sterling grey z4 doing continous laps round the m42 then you'll know the outcome

This will help you: http://www.xoutpost.com/electronics/navigation-system/50902-v32-has-been-released-now-available.html

Cheers PVR

Had a good look through that thread but I find it quite complicated.

Looks like taking it to BMW...

If its £99 for the map disc, do I get the latest firmware with that too ?

Thanks again.

I picked up a 2010-1 disk from my dealer last month... got it for £90 inc vat... but it doesnt come with the latest firmware version. My unit was and still is on V31 (the latest being v32)

I have been meaning to update the firmware on mine for some time.. just never got around to it.

Also I havent noticed any road difference from my old 2008-1 to 2010-1... I was atleast expecting the Derby Royal Hospital which moved back in early 2008 to be updated

V31 to V32 is not worth upgrading as far as I have seen.

Fancy selling your 2008-1 disk for a token to me ? I have to cars with MKIV and generally have the newest map in the car that I use most.

I've just been on the blower to Benham Wolverhampton, who say "unless you have a problem with your Nav system, it's not worth upgrading to v32"

When I asked for a price on the 2010 map disc, he quoted me £140+VAT including exchange of my old disc (2006)
When I mentioned that I'd read on here that some BMW dealers will do the disc for £99 - he laughed and said "that is below cost price. we pay more than that to get the discs in !" & "I can't see any BMW dealer selling them for below cost price"

So I said I'd leave it for now.

When I mentioned "night colours" on the maps, he said that was nothing to do with firmware, and that this feature was part of the map disc itself.

More confused than ever

Yeah, a map knows to display in night colour ... :x

I will check the sign on Vines's service desk to see if it is still there next time I am in.
