Sat Nav Version

My car was built Aug 2016 and has sat Nav.
Today the dealer has installed the latest version for me as they suspect there might have been some file corruption on the original version.

Does anyone know if I will see any changes other than a few new bits of road?

Not really. My Z is the same age and I have updated the satnav on two or three occasions as new maps have been made available. However, other than new roundabouts appearing, etc. the system remains as is.

The new version installed today.
There was a possibility that the original installed version may have been corrupted as I had a problem last year when I took the car to Netherlands an Germany - I could not lock onto satellites when in Europe - the Dutch BMW garage joked it was a Brexit version !

With only a map update you will not see anything other than new road layouts etc, the only other way you'd see any difference is if there was a system update and I doubt there will be any updates to that for a while if at all ever especially as CIC is no longer used.

You just reminded me that I need to update my nav! Missing a few new roads since the I last update in 2017.

2018-2 should be out soon though, I think 2018-1 came out in October last year.

Same on most BMW cars (all actually that I know of, ). Updating the same system with newer maps and you get new roundabouts, roads, new buildings etc that appear if there is a delta form what you have now. But other than that, pretty much the same. That's a good thing IMO.

When I did mine, I got all the map files and extracted them to a usb memory stick.

Plugged that into the usb socket in the glovebox and it recognises there are update files on it, and prompts you to update. Put the code in and go for a long drive (it can take about an hour).

Yeah, the code is silly....about 100 characters in length! (ok, thats a slight exaggeration, but it is quite long).

Where can you obtain the installation code?

It’s left me with a lack of confidence in the system - ok it failed last year and appreciate these things happen. The dealer has been advised to move the dash cam antenna and install the updated the software. I go to Europe in August and just hope it works properly. What do i do if it doesn’t ? Another attempt at a fix but another year before that car goes to Europe again - starts to look a bit silly. The car will be three by then.

There is some logic in the assumption of BMW tech that the sat nav aerial and dash cam aerial conflict being adjacent but I await to be convinced. This year I’m taking an old TomTom 910

I think I will have to demand a ferry crossing if it needs any work this September even if I have to take a techie from the dealership!

In the Uk it’s inch perfect!

I bought the 35is new in Sept 16 and first took the car to Europe in the following August - during the time at home no problems.

Normally set my first stop in Germany while waiting to board and when I get off in Ijmuiden click on resume guidance - Whithin 30/60 secs the sat nav locks on and away we go. Last year after being in a Farady cage of the car deck it remained as if in the port of Tyne . It seemed it didn’t want to see the satellites . Unlike the TomTom kit i don’t think there is any method of testing satellite lock?

After a few hours I did get a lock but not for very long.

Was it a Hardware Problem or software? I guess I will probably never know but if it works I will only be left with curiosity.
If it doesn’t , annoyance!
