Hi,

Just bought an 07' z4m coupe from nottingham and i live in kent. The satnav for some reason thinks its in cambridge and as i drive the co ordinates change but not to the right location. Any ideas??? On the instruction manual it shows pictures with the earth in the top right hand corner of the split screen which ive got but its missing a satellite next to it which are in the pics

Thanks

Could be a faulty or non-original disc? There was a thread recently but can't find it now, or remember what it said :slaphead:

No sat reception, aerial could be disconnected. Try to reboot it by taking the power off the battery for 30 seconds or so.

On the odd day mine can't lock on to the satellites - infuriating if you have several calls to make in Warrington and Widnes and sent all the co-ords to the sat nav and 30 miles from home the sat nav thinks i'm in Manchester. Had to stop, buy a map and drive without due care and attention all day in unfamiliar territory. Crap. Dropped into a dealer in warrington, they did the reporgramme thing and disconnected the battery to no avail. Next day it was fine! I now have a phone with GPS as a backup!

Have look at the SatNav section of X5World.com - The best forum in the world for BMW SatNav issues.

tried disconnecting battery and no luck. i doubt its a copy CD issue as i bought it from a main dealer. I'll try X5 site but i've booked her in to the dealer for thursday if i have no luck. I'll post the solution once its hopefully resolved on thursday.

cheers for the help

Hi,

had another go on the sat nav and read the instructions properly! Turns out you can manually enter the position of the car and the instructions advise that this is not done regularly. Thing i can't understand is surely the system should understand its location and position - thats the whole point of being linked to the satellites isn't it?

I've got the same problem. Similarly got the car six weeks ago from a dealer miles away and it's happened twice now.

Agree with you comments that surely the system should know where it is in the first place....

Buy a £ 100 tom tom or similar. Much easier. The hugely expensive fitted sat navs are IMO a waste of money, but we all tend to feel scared on not having them fitted in case we can't sell the car on, but in truth, the latest portable nav's are much better at a fraction of the cost.

Bought a new 3 series recently and ticked the Sat Nav option - salesman told me not to bother as the BMW Sat Nav was cr..p! Took his advice and use a Garmin AND saved about £1500.

Maybe you actually ARE in Cambridge? You need to stop drinking...... :D

Sounds to me like the GPS antenna is not connected/faulty in some. Just do a warranty job on it.

I agree with Williams F1. You may have a poor/loose connection from your GPS Receiver to the aerial - which is behind your front bumper.

You also probably need to install the latest version of the BMW SatNav Operating System (V32). Have a look at http://www.xoutpost.com/electronics/navigation-system/50902-v32-has-been-released-now-available.html for details. Good old BMW dealers won't/can't tell you about these things as their "salesmen" aren't bright enough to understand these things. Bear in mind that your Mk IV DVD unit is 5 years behind the times in terms of GPS technology.

Personally (& I have done), I would stop using the poor BMW unit & treat it purely as an eventual selling bonus. Buy a £150 TomTom for £50+ less than the £200+ latest BMW 2009-2 Map DVD! At least you can transfer the TomTom between any car & don't waste £2000+ when you change cars...

the GPS antenna is below the dashboard behind the instrument panel and the connections runs all the way back to the DVD unit, this is where the retrofit kit says to place it and would assume it's the same for factory fit.
