Sat Nav stopped working after a big pothole?

The antenna itself is not fragile, if the OEM one is anywhere close to the ones I've seen. I'm fairly confident it is a connection that has been jarred loose. This could mean a connection inside the antenna casing, so essentially you may still need a new antenna, though the actual antenna itself is fine. The external connection is worth a check in any case.

You might be able to get to the GPS antenna plug from the boot to save taking the unit out which will require half the interior to come out as well.

Had a look in the boot and lifted the carpet and I can just about see the wireing at the back of the CD changer but the Sat Nav is on the next shelf up and there is no access to it.

However I did find the a Nav retro fit guide and the two pages below describe how to remove the centre console which actually seems like an easy job so have ordered another GPS antenna today and when it turns up, I'll open the console, check to see if it is not a loose connection and if not, plug the new antenna in and see if I can then pick up satalites.

If that doesnt work... it will be back to square one :headbang:

Last bit of advice needed before changing the GPS antenna.

Anyone Spliced together a GPS antenna coaxial cable before?

The new GPS antenna hasn't turned up yet (tenner online) but I'm now pretty confident it is the actual GPS antenna at fault rather than a loose connection at the back of the DVD Unit . To save a lot of time taking off the shortage compartment to plug in the new antenna and then having to locate it in the boot (magnetic so can find somewhere behind carpets in inner wing), whats the consensus on cutting the original wire from where the current GPS antenna is located, cutting the wire off the new GPS antenna and then splicing together so the new antenna can still be located in the original location?

If it doesn't work, I'll have to buy a new antenna and take the storage compartment off to locate in the boot , but if it does, a lot of time saved and antenna will be located correctly.

Surely splicing the wire is no different to slicing the coaxial wire on Virgin or Sky box and shouldn't affect reception if done correctly?

Thanks Stuart... Point noted.

I'll jut locate the new one in the boot somewhere then as to be honest, not really bothered of the location as long as it works. Just Splicing the wire seemed like a lot less work but then again, removal of the center console isnt rocket science either

Guessing its quite small. It might fit on the parcel shelf under the rear window. Or up on the plastic between the roll hoops. Very unobtrusive and should pick up a good signal.

Just to add something else into the mix - you can claim for any damages caused by potholes from the council. If it's broken your satnav - claim against the council for a new one! They are the ones responsible for not spending our hard-earned car tax, new car tax, car vat, fuel duty and fuel vat on actually repairing the roads!!!

I was very impressed that when I was testing my first installation, that even with the GPS aerial stuck underneath the dashboard on a metal bracket - it still worked perfectly.

I left my on that metal bracket when I did mine. Always worked fine. - never understood why some cars have an unsightly plastic lump on the bootlid?

Yes, I left it there as well as the aerial was magnetic and it felt like superglued on that bracket :D

No idea why I have a massive fin on the roof of my X5 now either, even the previous X5 did not have that ...

Success at last!!!!

Plugged the new GPS antenna on after a lot of faffing about trying to remove the center console and got GPS fix withing 5 mins. As the new unit is so small and magnetic, ran it out or the rear back bulkhead all the way round to the rear light cluster and have wedged it into the rear corner near the back of the light cluster.

Did the fitting round my mates in the garden and on the drive home, even though the Almanac hasn't updated yet due to cloudy sky's, the GPS fix was spot on.

The only downside to the whole fix was the very first bit of the dismantling instructions that I downloaded said to pull the center console cover hard towards you... Well I ended up pulling it so hard, it broke so I now need to buy a new one of them

Never the less all done now and one again I thank all you guys for your advise.

I trust you had removed the screws first from that lid ...

Once removed, you do indeed have to pull hard to get it out. Never broken one yet ...

What exactly did you break?

Seems this one had been taken out before (badly) so was cracked around the hinge are, When I gave it a hard pull, The hinge fittings came out of the lid.

Have managed to shove everything back in and have just glued the bottom of the lid back together so hopefully will hold (or I need to get a new lid).

If I do have to buy a new one, at least I can find my way to the dealer now using Sat Nav

Satnav stopped working after Insp1.. hoping it wasn't from a pothole or hitting a hole hard as it was working when i dropped it off :(

Useful post - no way I'd be removing the console though.. it's far easier to remove the boot carpet. Hadn't thought of a cheapo ebay replacement - heading abroad & need it desperately, might be the easiest way to fix it til I get back.

Useful thread
