Hiya Guys

I have a very good altought 5 year old Sat Nav TomTom 1, which works fine but I think its due a software update  .. anyway

Going on the Euro tour this year and what to get the Sat Nav sorted so I need a Euro Map one?

Do I need to buy a new one or Can I just download some new maps form somewhere? and will it still work on my old TomTom?

Any suggestions on the best "route" :P

Thanks in advance

Paza

You can connect your 'old' tomtom to the tomtom home application and see what it offers.

Otherwise you can pick up the latest entry-level one for not much more - maybe even a refurbished one if you want to get more for your money.

Well I suppose in that case its best just to get a new one , mines done me proud for 5 years or so, so cannot complain really.

I think I pop my old one on flea bay may get a tenner for it

Any recommendations on a certain model or are they pretty much all the same?

Looked into this myself on the Tom Tom site . You can pay about £50 for western Europe but you will only get it in zones to down load from laptop as you need them due to memory size on the one. Also if uk maps out of date approx £40 for that. The Tom Tom x l can be bought for about £109 (halfords) with western europe already on it.

You're other option would be to take my old/spare TT730 (Western Europe maps) off my hands. No cash needed except for SD postage of about £10 - and maybe a donation to the forum on receipt.

If you PM me your address and email, then I'll change the account over to you so you can use TomTomHome on it in your own name.

Hi Paza,

Working for the aforementioned TT, I can probably give you some info. At 5 years old, if you have never updated the maps then essentially you are paying the highest price for the maps. If you update from one annual release to another then the cost is heavily discounted, if you miss one and update every 2 years then the discount will be less. So after 5 years there will be no discount and you are buying the maps from scratch.
The cheapest option would be to buy an annual map update service, where each quarter the map is updated and you download to your device. You end up with 4 updates through the year for around £50.

Alternatively you could buy a new device which will include a Latest Map Guarantee, this basically means that if there is an update sometime in the first 30 days of ownership it can be downloaded free of charge (inside tip... the new maps are released around the 15th of the following months Feb, May, August, November). Beyond that some device will have 12 months of map updates free, some will have free HD Traffic fro the first 12 months.

One other thing to be aware of, when buying Europe there are essentially 2 zones Europe & Western Europe. Europe covers (as it says Europe) Western Europe is more limited due to file sizes, but both cover UK & Ireland.

Hope this helps, let me know if you need any more info.
