Sat Nav Screen Questions

Hi All,

I've not picked up my Z yet, but i have a few questions that i couldn't find answers to via the search feature, (Spent all lat night looking over the forum) so hopefully someone could help.

I was told by the (trade) seller that yes you can play DVD Movies via the sat nav screen! :D I have since found out from searching this site that no...you can not :(

Never mind, i am now aware of the gadgets available that allow you to connect an IPOD to the CD Changer socket to have it fully compatible with the head unit (as in my current car) and/or the one that allows you to plug an AV source (DVD, Game Console etc) into it.

My questions are:

1) In reality, how easy would it be to fit one of these Plug and Play items?

2) How much rougly are you looking at to be able to play DVD's in the car?

3) If i did buy the gear that allows an AV source to be plugged in, how (or where) would i fit a slim-line DVD player? and how would i get power to it etc? (Not having my Z yet doesn't help as i cant even check the wiring that is already there) I was thinking something like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NU-PDP100-Hig...14&_trkparms=72:1301|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318

If anyone could help with any of the above questions, or even post pictures of their TV Tuner/DVD/Console setup i would be very grateful!

Thanks in advance!

Nick

Somebody posted about this a few days ago, do a search, but from memory visit http://www.toysinyourcar.com

What am I missing - why would you even want to play DVD's in the Zed? It would clearly be illegal if driving, so would you sit in the car while parked to watch?

Not a criticism, I just don't get why

I spend up to 50 minutes each day sitting in the car parked up outside the train station waiting for the gf. She doesn't drive but works miles away from my office, i can't really win either! Sometimes i'm 15 minutes late to pick her up; others im waiting absolutley ages!

In the VX i can't even listen to the stereo while I wait as the engine has to be running, and after 5 minutes stood still the temp starts to creep over 100 degrees. I usually just sit there watching a film or tv episode on my Video iPod until she arrives.

I Thought it would be a refreshing change to be able to watch a dvd or whatever in comfort :)

you'd need the tv module to start with, which is either £150+ or £450 depending on whether you want analogue (chans 1-5) or a freeview box which has the flashy EPG and lets you watch things like Sky Sports News. Then you'd need the loom which is $125 from here:

http://www.bimmernav.com/store/catalog/tv-video-module-retrofit-harness-no-module-item-107.html

Then I believe you can connect stuff to that module to use like rear cameras, using phono cables so I guess you'd be able to connect a dvd.

I believe someone has created a module themselves which lets you connect AV to the system without the tv module, but it was something like £350 anyway so i decided if you're going to do it you might as well get the proper tv, etc. can't remember where that was - might have been ebay.

i believe the best place to put a dvd player itself would probably be either in the cubby box behind the passenger seat (if you have basic hifi) or under the passenger seat itself.

if you only got an analogue tuner instead of digital i reckon you could do this all in for about £300, if you were prepared to fit yourself.

i'm constantly looking for a digital tv module on the cheap - one went on ebay.de the other night for about £380, prices seem to hold well and surely will only increase during the switchover as more people retrofit. might just bite the bullet and buy one, then sell it seperately to the car when it goes.

I know it's not perfect but hows about a netbook? You can get a Asus netbook for £150 and you will be able to link it to your phone to check emails and browse the z4-forum internet while you wait. No DVD drive, but you could rip them onto the HDD.

Is that N1k from vx220.org.uk? If so welcome to the dark side!! If not, welcome anyway!!

Edit: i should read this thread more thoroughly! Ofcourse you are!

I'd like to but I'm going to be busy with the Family and GF at its during Chinese New Year!

Are you going down to LWEM @ EUK?! I'm going to try make it down, but as said its during CNY so I might struggle! You'll have to arrange a meet somewhere along with Lucy (SC Member - Owns a 3.0si Coupe)! And get some pictures ;)

EdButler - It is I indeed! :)

I also had a laugh to myself last night, First I searched the VX forum for 'BMW Z4' and your thread came up, then I came on here doing some searching and randomly found a thread of a guy annoyed that someone had bought his potential Z4 while he was on the way to view it, then saw your reply on the same thread and realised it was all relating to the same car

Small world!

Hi Andy

So That lead is only about £85 and I can get a TV module for approx £150 so for £235 I could have TV in the Z?

well.. after typing all that, i went ahead and bought an analogue one i was watching on ebay uk for £150.

i was waiting for the digital one, but so many people say it's rubbish anyway that i thought id risk it, then it's a straight swap for the other later on if i use it more than once a year.

im going to order the loom & the tv-in-motion (£40ish ebay) asap, just not sure what extra is required in terms of aerials etc, as they don't appear to be in that loom.

got the bluetooth kit to put in too (after a year of it sitting in my garage) so thought if im gonna open it all up once, might as well put both in.. and maybe a couple of amps along the way..

watch this space :)
