Sat Nav - Rate it?

It wasn't top of my list when buying my coupe but glad I have it and the bluetooth now.... granted its not as good as a Tom Tom but it has been fine for me so far. And the pop up screen is cool... worth it just for that if it doesn't cost any extra

I think its ok, not as good as tom tom, and awkward withotu a touch screen, but the screen is brilliant for the computer, radio, telephone and the intravee.

But the biggest drawback is the lack of Postcode recognition and you have to input the road and city instead (basically because BMW have to pay a royality or premium for postcode recognition). (the travel information option is useful if you are going to specific hotel or pub).

My factory 57 reg with sat nav allows you to enter the post code.

5 digit postcode not the full 7 digit??

Ah OK, mine is a '55. Excuse the ignorance on this, but does the DVD just upgrade the map information or is it a software upgrade? As the graphic interface has not changed, so just curious after seeing the M3 pic.

DVD updates the map and the POI databases. Software upgrade changes the OS and later versions added things like 3D map view and ongoing minor bug fixes.

Software update is easy using downloads from the web of fleabay. Nobody seems to copyright that unlike the maps of course...

mmm-five. You must have a dodgy disk or OS to cause those faults

I like the idea of an 'integrated' system but when I got my wifes new 3 series last year the salesman suggested a Garmin or TomTom was a better option in terms of performance. As I don't change my cars on a regular basis (5 year plus man....) the resale value was perhaps not as important. No doubt the BMW integrated system will improve as newer versions are introduced.

It's a genuine disc from the dealer (and has never had anything other - not even to update the firmware), but yes it could still be knackered.

The problem is showing the fault to the service guys as it doesn't happen on short runs. The only thing that happens on short runs is it just doesn't plan a route for you - it accepts the address and then just goes back to the map, minus any instructions. Sometimes I can turn the ignition on & off and it will work and sometimes it won't work for a week.

I have had that, & it is usually due to making a "bad backup", but even then, very rarely.

I regularly swap between Perspective and Pointing North - to get a map view, for things like Diversions, random Traffic, etc. Sometimes then it crashes and restarts the nav - have you ever had this?

I know full well it's my issue and it's disk related, I'm wondering if you have a bad laser / DVD, because when mine is all correct, it's bloody brill. :D

The only time I've had issues is when I used to mess aorund programming new splash screens into the OS and sometimes as with Andy a bad set up would cause random problems, but in reality it never fails to map properly.

As you say though difficult to get the dealer to do anything as they'll fall back on the 'nothing wrong while we had it' routine.

Opps just checked and its a 5 digit code only :headbang:

But then there are only two roads with my postcode which show up!

Don't the non-genuine disks promote full 7 digit post codes? anyone had experience with these?

not allowed to discuss such things on here...

I have driven all over Europe with the built in nav. It looks good, it works well and the bluetooth with phonebook is handy. It has never let me down. In London it often does not take you the fastest route but what would you expect from a system that is almost 6 years old!!
