sat nav problems - again

currently own a 55 plate z4 with sat nav - but the screen intermitently gets stuck half way up or down when opening and closing.

found a replacement at a breakers yard - but he reckons it'll fit a x3 or a z4 - read somewhere they are not the same - or is it just the nav surrounds that are different ?

also he reckons the monitor and motor mechanism (the faulty bit in mine me thinks) are reconditioned - and has emailed a picture of them. I was led bto believe they are integral on the z4, but in the pictures they are seperate - any advice ? And anyone elses nav suffered a similar fate (1200 quid from stelaer !)

I'd speak to the dealer. It's not that far out of warranty, and they may do you a goodwill gesture.

Hmmm... now i'm in a quandry ! Think my local delaer Sythners will alugh me out the showroom - getting anything out of them is a nightmare ! maybe contact bmw customer service head office...

IIRC the X3 is actually designed to operate at a different angle therefore while it might fit it may actually appear faint as you are not looking from the designed angle.

Someone shoudl validate or correct me as I might have just made that up, or dreamt I read it

Hmmm... if the steper motor is controlled by the screen though, it may be ok ? £130 vs. 1200 from stelaer and i'm inclined to run the risk...

I think the stepper motor will be the same in both units, as said you can control the angle from the unit so shouldnt be an issue.

I have tried to locate where I could buy one of these motors from but they seem to be like hens teeth.

ever find out the spec of the motor i.e. voltage etc. ? wonder if you could sort an equivalent spec one from an electronics manufacturer...

removed sat unit - well, partly. Can't seem to figure out how power lead is detached ?

can I seperate monitor/motor/monitor tray easily ?

Mine failed, warranty job - they claimed it would've been £2k all in!

dealer is talking crap, delaer can retrofit SatNav for around £2K, monitor is around £800 IIRC and a ten minute job to swap

just trace the lead and you should find a white plug on the end that connects to the SatNav loom and it should just pull apart. You may have to take out the head unit depending where the plug is but shouldnt need to.

done it... with a bit of pushing and shoving managed to wriggle the unit out the dash - very little clearance.

have found lead, albeit it is covered in insulating tap. Interestingly having taken the gears apart and put all back together it is now working fine - well, open and closed it 30+ times without a problem and it hasn't been a problem once - fixed i wonder ? Or do I speak too soon... !

Also now the splash screen seems to appear every time I fire her up... which it did not do before... very strange.

Should problems re occur and I have to drop new monitor and motor into existing 'tray' fitting how easy is it to attach the internal cables from motor to screen ?

Splash screen doesnt appear evertime normally so not sure why you are getting it now but wouldnt worry.

if it's working then leave alone, regarding swapping all the parts this should be failry easy as all connectors are plugs just take you time and take photos to ensure you know where all the wires are routed.

splash screen appears when the nav boots from cold, doesn't when it's a warm boot.

I've done a lot of messing with mine and the audio recently and noticed this too, assumed it was something to do with the battery being lower than usual as I'd been messing with it, and it was switching the nav straight off when the key was switched off rather than a delay or whatever.

Definitely runs as expected now though so I'd assume yours is the same.

So, the sat nav display back up to its usual shenanigans.

Bid and won a new screen on ebay - albeit w/out the surround that goes with it.

Just received this message from seller:

Hello!
This device was uninstalled from X3, but I can confirm that this display fits in Z4 monitors for sure. :)
As for condition of the unit - the motor was also tested and has no problem. :) 100% working unit. Thanks!

Dubious as I thought the SCREENS were different sizes, tho all i need is motor... do i proceed with purchase ??

Was it advertised as a Z4 or X3?

If it's cheap enough for just the motor and you ditch the rest then probably OK, but as I posted before they are different and operate at different angles so there's a risk

What controls the stepper motor to the initial open position and subsequent incremental adjustment angles - I've no idea, so another risk
