Sat nav or not ?

I'm looking at buying a new z4, I'm very temped to spend the extra on sat nav pro (?) but it just doesn't look integrated into the dash,it looks like someone's screwed an iPad into the dash. I know the benefits of the system as its in my other Beemer but why not buy a Tom Tom and slip it into the cubbie hole and save a bundle of cash? I'll be honest, the 2k isn't what concerns me,it just looks ugly. I guess I just wanted to have some feedback from everyday users.

Er.. the Pro Navigation option is a screen that rotates in and out of the dash.. have you seen this on a Z4? it looks nothing like an iPad. Are you talking about the garmin add on that BMW do?

Sure the new 1 and 3 series look like iPads..

The functionality of the Pro Nav is very good, but lacking is some areas that the likes of tom tom have in the bag. Best to speak with your dealer on what it offers... If you don't want it, get a tom tom. You'll miss out on lots of very nice functionality tho. For me, it was a must.

I didn't like the look of it either and prefer TomTom. Our X5 has it built nicely in the dash but the Z one folds out the top like an afterthought and spoils it. Would be much better down below. Decided to save the money and go for bigger engine instead.

Im with Maniac on this whilst it is very expensive it is very good , are you sure you are not looking at the semi intergrated version?

I would opt for an after market such as tom tom or garmin. My Zed does not have sat-nav. But my garmin works great. My wife's 2008 328 has sat-nav. And I still take along the Garmin as it will show the speed limit for the road you are on. While the BMW unit does not.

Agreed!

Hi and welcome to the Forum

If I were buying new I would certainly opt for the best OEM Sat Nav I could afford as this will i.m.o. affect future resale value.

If we're talking afterthoughts...

At least the e89's iDrive is integrated, fold it out to use it, fold away for security/a nice looking interior.

I know how good the pro nav is. I've got it in the F11. So pro nav folds into the top of the dash? Got one for the weekend so ill see then.

Got pro nav on both our e87 1'er and e89 Z4. I hate having wires trailing etc, and didn't want to hack about hiding cables from a TomTom etc in a brand new car.

Love the way it is integrated etc.

Have to agree though, the stand alone sat navs (TomTom, Garmin etc) do offer much more functionality, i.e. speed camera alerts, current road speed etc etc and I do miss those.

Even little things like changing to night mode when the light drops..the inbuilt one on the e89 doesn't do that.

Lightly considering a road angel gem thingy to provide speedcam warnings and speed limit display etc, but it goes back to having an aftermarket device in the car.

F series cars might have more functionality.

When the light drops the pro nav display goes into night mode, very similar in view to the Tom Tom . The facelift z4 nav seemed to be almost pay as you go, download rtti for so much, Facebook , google etc. it will most likely be free for 3 years,as it currently is. I'm going to have to delve deeper.....
