Sat Nav Night Mode

Hi guys,

Does anyone know if there is a software update available that will enable me to make the night mode on the sat nav come on automatically?

At the moment I have to switch between day and night modes manually.

I had a 2012 318d as a loan car a couple of months ago and that had seemingly the same iDrive system, but there was an auto setting.

Thanks!
Stuart

Not available for the e89. Just assign a radio button to do it, that's what I did.

It is available on the new F series cars.

Thanks Maniac.

I know I should just read the manual... but how do I assign a radio button to it?

Read the manual... :P

Go to the option in the iDrive (the night / day mode option). Then hold down the button on the radio button panel for a few seconds to set that option to that button.

+1 - I assigned a button too. Otherwise it's a PITA to keep finding in the menus

I have assigned a button. I can't believe they didn't think to make the switch from day/night mode automatic.

Also why do you not have a journey by journey time and fuel consumption average. If you want that you have to remember to reset the stats when you start off. Even my crappy golf did that.

I also set a button to put the screen down; I get bored looking at it and the view is sometimes nicer without it up.

I also have a number assigned for it, along with Traffic info and turning off the bloody stupid speaking voice! she really annoys me!

'I can't believe they didn't think to make the switch from day/night mode automatic'

- what WOULD be cool, would be that it gradually fades (like when you drive into the night on Gran Turisimo....

It would be a really nice subtle thought. (just like the way the reflection on the E89 nav screen sort of shows a reflection of sunlight from windows. - even if it is a 4 pane window, not the Zeds glass.

I know that the system Audi fit switches to Night Mode when the headlights are on! Even my cheapo Tomtom does autonight mode. There must be a PE cell in there somewhere or other :)

I have a Garmin that has a database for sunset linked to your location. I believe that is how it determine when to dim. If only we could port any of the hand held maps to the iDrive, wouldn't that be great :)

My screen does dim a tad when the headlights come one, but it doesn't flip into night mode (different colours). My headlights are always on auto, so yes, it knows about light levels in order to sort the lights out!

I reckon it would be a simple (for them!) recode to link it in, but they arent gonna do that now, as development will be on the new idrive systems.

It does annoy me how the inbuilt sat nav lacks functionality when compared to standalone units like TomTom etc! Even the speed limit display...BMW use a car mounted camera to read speed signs, my old TomTom used to know based on its map data.....

Speed cam warnings? Not on iDrive!

Can you add POI's to idrive?

iDrive as navigation will always be missing something as they've so many markets to conform to. As a whole I really like the system, but there are some omissions on the Nav front. Its nothing that would prevent me getting the same system again though. I wonder if the facelift will have the night mode option, I assume so given it appears to have the newer iDrive system. The new car, even with new iDrive still isn't enough to get me onboard and take that huge depreciation hit again. No more new cars for me, what a waste of money. 3+yr old cars is where its at (rant over).

Even buying at that age I would still reckon to loose 50% every three years. :(

Fine if depreciation is your only concern... but I figure 3 years old is a good balance between depreciation and the general state of the car still being desirable and not too knackered by owners.

I would agree - depreciation is accelerated if the car has been obviously mistreated. However I think cars such as the Z4 tend to be bought by "enthusiast" owners and in general, are well cared for.

It is a shame BMW don't team up with a company who create intuitive software with the consumer in mind - eg Apple or Google. A lot of the features which in my view are missing from the iDrive are really small, but proportionately quite annoying. It would not be hard to tweak it here and there. But as Maniac says, it is a car at the end of the day so performance and safety as a vehicle is more important than the toy features so you can't really blame a car manufacturer for focusing on that.

I drove into work today and glanced back at the car after parking it. Such a beautiful machine.
