Hi

I have been reading up on wanting to upgrade my Sat Nav DVD from the 2005 version to something newer, maybe 2013 or something lol

however before i even think about going to my local bmw stealership I'm wondering whether i need to upgrade the firmware from its current version, so that it can run a duel layer DVD

Anyone played with the custom firmware versions or is it best to stick to the standard version

Current Firmware Version SW 4-1/50
Zed - Yr 2004 E85
Current DVD - BMW Road Map Europe High DVD 2005-1

Thanks in advance :P

i got a copy of the firmware from some one off here IRC but its available else where pretty easy. i would go with standard to start off with. im also sure you can get a copy of the nav discs too if you look.... i wouldn't have a clue where but its out there :? and then just a simple job to write to a dual layer disc.

How do you upgrade the firmware?

What happens if you put a newer version in and your firmware rejects it?

for my version, it allows the dvd reader to read duel layer discs, also have speed trap locations and night mode

you remove the sat-nav software dvd, insert the F/W disc, put the keys in the ignition, turn the key so the engine lights come on, but don't start the car

the software update should auto start and you follow the on screen instructions, once complete remove the f/w disc and re-insert the latest sat-nav disc, and thats it i guess

p.s i think there is a 3d mode using a hidden menu (still researching)

If you know how to make a CD from an ISO file you can download the f/w cd image from my google drive. PM me for the link.

Once you have the f/w updated, to get the 3D mode:

1) enter the setup menu
2) press and hold the menu button for a few seconds until the hidden service menu appears
3) scroll down to perspective mode and enable it

Then exit the menu and start the nav and go into the map display

Press the right button and look at map orientation and you'll find perspective has been added to the available options

Hope that helps

As we're on the topic of the navigation system, I was wondering : is it possible to put a newer system (like >2010) in a E85 ?

I assume the interface/screen got a lot better between 2004 and 2012...

For example in my Audi A3, I could simply plug & play a newer radio-navigation system and everything would work automatically.

Sorry, I'm kind of off-topic but I didn't want to open a new one just for this :D

You could - but need an entire iDrive system for that to retrofit as well :)

But it's not all in one piece (except for the screen) ?

If you already have the nav, couldn't you just replace the radio unit and screen with the newer ones?
