Sat Nav issue

Started to get an intermittent issue with the sat nav.

Roughly speaking 50% of the time I start the car the sat nav is totally out of sync with the displayed map. It tracks my route perfectly but could be anything from 100metres to 10k off course. Tracks me perfectly but across fields and housing estates, always trying to get me to the correct route. Next time I start the car it's perfect and never misses a turn.

Latest OS and tried 2 different maps and no changes made to the system for months.

I'm thinking GPS antennae, but before I start ripping bits out or ordering am interested if anyone else has had this issue?

When it is wrong, how many satellites do you get (in the setup screen)? I would indeed suspect the aerial (about a tenner from ebay).

Good question Paul - I have to go out in the Zed in an hour, so will check and let you know. Bet it works perfectly today :(

(Probably not back on-line until mid afternoon to post a response)

Hi there.

This used to happen to me, specially after extended cloudy days (I would see 8 sats - I think). I believe its the GPS antenna on its way out. Although I ended up not having to replace it, but I had searched for and found out that one does not have to rip out everything back to the trunk. There's a connecter in the antenna housing (rear-view mirror area) and one can get away with just disconnecting the old antenna there and re-connecting the new one; here's the how-to: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=62992

Hope this helps.

Thankfully it failed this morning so I got a chance to see what happened and it showed no satellites, so I have a starting point

instiga - thanks for the link to Si's thread.

Looks like I'll get a new antennae and see if that fixes it.

Had this exact same problem - was the GPS Antennae. I replaced with another, worked fine ever since. I provided an update on the Alpina forum, here

CJ,

You might want to go into the hidden menu and check to see if the Almac is status Yes or No.

The Almac info once downloaded basically uses the movement of wheels and gyro sensors to keep you on course when no satellites are showing so if you have intermittent GPS antenna issues and Almac status is No, each time you lose GPS reception, the display will move off course then return back on course when a GPS fix is found again.

Good point - worth me doing that.

I do fully understand how the GPS works on Zeds and can actually see the effect of the ABS sensors triggering correction of speed and direction. With the start position out then it's just a set of relative movements with no GPS correction

Never doubted you didnt know but just in case anyone else was wondering what the Almac setting was, I was just trying to give a description the best I could in layman's terms so no need to get touchy about it.

Sorry if I appeared so - most certainly wasn't touchy on it and didn't mean it to be taken that way.

Hi Phil, mine went out of sync after i left the battery off for a couple of days, i ran DIS and cleaned memory then it sorted itself out.
