Sat Nav 'hole'

Morning All,

Am in the process of changing my radio set up - probably to a Pioneer with the slide out screen. Fitting a Double Din radio would be better, just look an absolute mission - Good money spinner for someone if they design a mould to fit a Double Din radio and re-channel the heating vents!

Anyway , my Z has the Nav which will now be made redundant, leaving a large hole in the top of the dash..

Just wanted to see if anybody has any obscure or intersting ideas as to what they have done in a similar position, I'm probably going to just 3D print a nice pocket for storage etc. but open to ideas. Sourcing a dash with no Nav is another option, but with Airbags and such much beyond my pay grade, I'd be keen to avoid.

Thanks,
Jamie.

Item 1 on this

Assuming the 1 Series used the same size NAV screen that might be the neatest solution, but I think you'd need Item 2 as well.

My 57 plate 1 series had Option S493A and it was just right for storing my sunglasses!

If the 1 series dash storage compartment fits they're pretty cheap for a used one on Ebay by the looks of it. I'd be interested to know if it fits in case I ever ditch my nav too.

Me too. Lots of secondhand units available, so if this fits its a nice option to have.

My concern is if it has the same curved front that the Z has. I'll continue to look to see if there's any light shedded on this.

I'm also interested in this if anyone knows. Long term I think I'd like to put one of the android units in there, but switching out to the standard business radio, and re-purposing the space as a cubby hole is an attractive (and far simpler) short term mod.

Ditto, although I think I'd prefer an open pocket/hole rather than lid, with some no slip material on the bottom.

I suspect I know the answer, but are there any fasias out there for a Double Din radio? I've spent days searching to no avail, and can see a few DIY jobs on forums, but with my inability, hoping somebody may have already designed one!

This is an 8 year old link, but its essentially wanting to convert the cubby hole left behind in a 1 series, with an android unit. Could extend a similar method on the Z4 if the measurements/curves work enough?

Know there’s already way to retrofit an android screen into a Z4, but its always looked a bit big to me. This might be the answer...

AFAIK James, IamOrion has done this with his (well before he got a whole new dash)? I know he removed the Sat Nav, remember seeing that. I'm sure he was talking about a compartment of some sort. Might be worth having a search for some of his posts? Or getting in touch :)

I've just found this thread from @IamOrion, which is extremely helpful. With permission, I'd like to try and get someting printed for my centre console.

I'll update shortly.

Glad I could provide some assistance
Too soon for an update? :poke: lol

I have a fascia on order to be 3D printed, to fit a double din radio.

Going to see how that arrives/ quality of product before I order the picket design for the SatNav hole.

Just to update this, saw a guy on eBay who is breaking a Z4 with a storage compartment fitted.

Might be worth contacting him for the part?

Thanks Man. To update you all, I have taken the Sat Nav part out of the dash, and also removed the Sat Nav itself leaving the casing where it sites/ opens and closes.

Now in the process of getting it 3D scanned and a new desgin made to sit in the hole. My intentions are to fit a couple of stands/ charging dock for phones plus additonal storage.

You have any sketches? Could be a great solution to those with nav that want to use their phones horizontally - effectively as Apple/Android CarPlay devices. Maybe design the stand so it can charge wirelessly (with bluetooth connectivity to the car).

Not as yet, as haven't had the existing piece scanned to work out what can be done. I'll atached a couple of photos in a sec (too big to load directly from laptop).
