Saris Bike Rack on a Coupe?

Anyone tried using a Saris Bones bike rack or something similar on their Coupe, or even a Roadster?

I've seen the post back in Jan this year about a hitch welded to the underside of the car but was wondering if anyone had gone for a rack instead?

Cheers in advance.....

Yep, brought one a few weeks back. Got a 3 bike one, but only used it for 1 so far.

Can't fault it. Straps need to be pulled real tight, and rack is mounted pretty high up on the hatch, as 1st time I used it I had it quite low and it was sitting on the rear bumper, which being PU isn't the best. Now I've found a good position for it though can comfortably do 70mph+ for a few hours with it.

Put a few bits of foam on the clips to guard against any damage, they were fine on the 1st use though. Just me being a bit over protective.

Well worth the money. But just so you know, my road bike goes in the boot fine with the wheels off. Just means any other luggage has to go in passenger footwell and seat, hence the need for rack some of the time.

If you want some pics, I'll get some up at the weekend. Bike was in the boot this week. :)

Cheers aml_al. Glad to hear someone is using one. What actual model of Saris did you go for?

My rack will be getting used for a MTB so I'm not sure if that will fit in the boot plus on the way home it will be covered in allsorts of mud, blood etc etc..

If you could get a pic of the rack in place with a bike on it that'd be great!!

I've not yet bought a MC but I'm on the look out. The plan was for the missus to buy a CRV for bikes etc but now she's decided to go for something like a TT so my plans of stealing her car and making her get the bus to work have been quashed!!!!! I would have to give up the plans of a MC or quit biking if I couldnt transport my bike. More than likely the bike would get punted!!! :driving:

I went with the bones.

Yea I'm going to invest in a bike bag for when the weather turns and the bikes all wet.

You can put bike racks on tow bars can't you..?

I'm not saying anything further, but I still have my caravan and I've got previous for unusual towcars... :fuelfire:

I am actually about to advertise a 3 bike tow ball mounted rack, got light fittings and plate board too.

That's awesome, did you even feel the extra weight of the caravan behind that?

Towbar bike racks are great. My previous car wasn't rated for towing (Seat Ibiza Cupra TDI - due to the Cupra suspension apparently) but I fitted a towbar myself and modified the rear bumper, purely to fit a Thule 3-bike rack. Was a 30sec job to remove rack (and detachable towbar), no contact with car so no damage to worry about.

I'd thought about a towbar but didn't think there would be any room to weld the brackets to a Z4M with the quad pipes.

Maybe I could get one for her TT though!! Now theres an idea!!! :)

Not cheap, but awesome: http://www.thettshop.co.uk/rack.asp

I'd be surprised if the company that make this style of rack wouldn't be able to make one for the Z4, even the M with the exhausts - they manage it with the TT with it's exhausts at either side...

I have a Saris Guardian 2 and think it works great. Very secure, much better than the Hollywood one that broke on it's 2nd outing. I have the hatch hugger straps which I would definitely recommend for positioning the straps over the glass. Had no issues with it at around 80mph.

Couple of pics of the Saris Bones. Not fully strapped down. But gives you an idea of where it sits on the car.

Goes in the boot too.

Cheers aml_al, thats exactly what im after. Probs just go for the 2 bike option though. Do the top straps not scare the hell out of you hooked to the glass? The top picture has a white mark next to the hook. Is that from the rack or is it just the way my screen os showing me the image?

Cheers for going to the effort, much appreciated !!

Nic, those huggers look like the way forward cheers!

I really cant wait to get my hands on a Coupe. Just a week and a half left at work then I'm back home on the hunt again!!!!!

Nah the hooks are fine. Got some foam on them to prevent scratching and when tight they're not going anywhere as they're the main load bearers. I'd be more worried about the huggers rubbing the cord against the seal when shutting the hatch to be honest.

The white in the 1st shot is just a light reflection.

I was going to go for the 2 bike version, but being a div, left it untill the day I needed the rack to go and buy one and they'd run out of 2's!

I've had no issues with these so far. There has been no movement when in use and I wouldn't be comfortable latching onto the top of the glass. I know it's strong but it would worry me.

bikes with only 1 wheel are so hard to ride, i can do a wheely for only 25 meters
I would pay a fiver to see you attempt a 25m wheelie on a bike with no front wheel.. I'm sure we can gather more cash than that for the next meet ?
