Saris Bike carrier any good?

Personally I wouldn't use anything that came into contact with the boot lid or roof. None of it is fixed/made to hold anything other than its own weight.

So I've got the Saris Bones 2 rack and have used it with success on my old E85 (fairly similar shape to E89 I think). However it really relies on there being a small step between the rear bumper and the bottom of the boot lid. This way the weight of the rack is supported on the step. The Z4 doesn't have a step so I had to put the two bottom "feet" of the rack on the bumper just under the boot lid but the angle is nearly vertical so it's easy for it to move if it's not tightened up really tight. It did leave a few marks on the bumper and on top of the boot lid, but it did work with a bit jiggery pokery.

Hope this helps

i bought a saris gran fondo. not tried it on the z4 but on the golf i.m very happy with it

Likely fine on an e85 or e86 where the boot is fixed. On the e89 the boot is not a fixed part of the body and cannot take load (well, it can, but it might bend, which won't do the roof any good).
