same size tires on all 4 wheels

I'm sure there is a reason why we can't fit the same size tire on all 4 corners of our Z4s. Would anyone care to enlighten me?

Thanks,

Wiseguy

There is no reason. Some come with squared setup. Especially most of the 16" and 17" on the 2.0i and 2.2i

I run 225/45-17 in all 4 on my track wheels. Only because it was cheap

As StigJ - all a matter of choice.

The only downside would be a loss of grip on the rear due to the smaller contact patch.

I've done it on an M5 that had the factory option of 4 of the same size, or 2 normal fronts & 2 wider rears. When I started tracking it I had staggered track tyres and then for cheapness I turned to 4 tyres of the same size, only took 4 laps before I knew I'd made a mistake - although the extra oversteer was fun :P

Where would I stand on putting rear size tyres onto the front of my Z4C?

Wheels are aftermarket 8.5 18" all round, with the fronts, it might be the lack or rim protection, but seems as though I'd need slightly wider fronts to make it 'look' right.

Would using the same profile as the rears up-front either a) rub, or b) cause other issues?

Cheers

I'm trying to figure out the best setup for carrying a spare tire on long trips. I currently need 4 new tires, plus a full size spare wheel and tire (I don't want a space saver). I was thinking that if all 4 tires could be the same size, I'm covered with one spare no matter which tire fails. If I keep the staggered sizes, then like mj2k, I'd be concerned about carrying the larger size spare (255/35 R 18 90 W), as I'm not sure it would fit the front of the car.

Likewise, if I buy the smaller spare tire (225/40R 18 88 W), how would the car drive if the spare is used on the rear, with two diffreent sized tires on the rear at one time?

Buying and fitting 4 tires in the same size and 1 spare in that size soleves the dilemma.

I am interested in an answer to mj2k's question, above.

Thanks!

All the cars I've driven that have a staggered set up only come with a front-sized spare, which means it will fit on front or back.

However you'd want to get to a tyre place as soon as possible to repair/renew the damaged one.

The other alternative is to carry a spacesaver tyre, which has the advantage of taking up less room, but the disadvantage that you're stuck to 50mph for about 50 miles.

I have all 4 the sane for winter and due to a time delay on my new wheels, these tyres are still on the car.

It does make the car over steer slot easier on the limit, so if you enter a corner too quickly the rear will go. The ESP also kicks on alot more as the rears can't find the grip.
