Found a you tube vid of the Salmon Relays in action..dont understand German so no idea what he is saying

Well it's trying to find a solution as to why the relays fail. It can bee seen there is a lot or arcing as the contacts break, which is normal and particularly bad when on DC systems. Erosion of the contacts may be causing roof operation problems as some of us have experienced.
Someone has taken the trouble to take apart and film.

The only odd thing about the video is that it looks like it's out of the car and may not be under full load operating a actual roof. In which case even more current would be flowing and even bigger arc would occur.
If you take the relay apart you can see the soot formed on inside of the case.
 
Yes I thought it would be of interest to you FB..have a look at his others..he's got a bit of the latching mech with what looks like some plastic contacts.. a lot happens when the boot lid closed.. not sure you are correct about the roof as you can hear a lot of slamming noises that sound like the roof operating..
