Sainsburys 97 RON petrol

Does anyone use this? Interested in hearing some views.

The problem i see is that Z's are ideally supposed to run on 98 RON. I only use V-Power/Tesco 99 and the sainsburys 97 isn't any cheaper than the Tesco. But the Sainsburys is much closer to my work and i can collect lots of juicy nectar points.

I don't want to start another standard VS super unleaded debate, just wondering if 97 is any better than 95 if it runs best on 98?
 
My fuel cap and the owners manual on my 3.0si says no less than 91RON. yes ninety one! The car is equipped with a knock sensor which adjusts yhe timing depending on fuel. All lower ron fuel does is reduce power output and efficiency.

Out of interest where does it say 98 ron?

It says in the handbook:

"The engine of your BMW is designed to run on: SuperPlus/premium plus petrol, octane 98 RON. Run the engine on this petrol by preference, in order to achieve rated performance and fuel consumption"

I know 95 is perfectly safe to use and if there is a performance benefit i certainly can't feel it. I just like to run my pride and job on the best.
 
I use Sainsbury's super, like you say, the bonus of necter points..... my TVR runs on it too and although I'm unsure about BMW saying use 98 ron only, my Chim does need to be run on at least 98 ron but I've found Sainsbury's super to be just fine.... by the way, BP supply Sainsbury's out of interest :)
 
Just checked the manual, like tomTVR says.....98 is what should be used to acheive nominal performance values but my book does not say anything about an order of preference, it simply states you can also run the engine on 95 and 91. Not that I`m saying everyone should abandone 98RON :D
 
Point to note that Shell no longer sell 98 RON in NL for example, "Super" is still 95.
 
I often use Sainsburies super unleaded when i cant be bothered to go to my shell/ or tesco 99 Ron... When i got my car dyno'd last year it was on Sainsbury's fuel.

Not noticed any ill effect...... even used standard unleaded a few times when the garage have been out of the good stuff..... but notice the power delivery not so smooth on 95.

They don't use RON but rather Octane, 91 Octane = 95 RON. US pumps can offer as low as 85 Octane, so in the US, you need to use 'mid/high' grade fuel. US pumps will often offer, say 85, 91 and 93 Octane. In the UK our minimum is 95 RON anyway so it runs on anything.
 
In the States, the octane is an average of 2 ratings, research octane (RON) and motor octane (MON). These 2 numbers mean different things. Research Octane number is always higher than Motor Octane number.

As a general rule you can convert European RON to USA RON (aka AKI) by multiplying it by 0.95, so roughly...

99 --> 94.05
97 --> 92.15
95 --> 90.25
