Take the little toolbag with the tow hook and allen Key and place it in the glovebox or somewhere in the cabin,....not in the boot (the allen key is to unlock the 7spd DCT, if you have one).

Why?

Because when you have a complete electrical failure and the car shuts down instantly it is impossible to get into the boot to get the tow hook or the allen key out. This will save you time and effort so the tow truck won't have to drive into the ditch to boost the battery, the boost also lets you get the emergency "stuff" out of the boot , such as the flashlight you need 'coz it's 8pm and quite dark in the countryside etc.etc. If you have the manual tranny, you shouldn't have an issue re the allen key .

Next: be aware that the car has no emergency flashers, lights, AND you can't take it out of gear ....nothing works. So, whatever gear you were in , it is still in it. (I was in 7th doing 120kmh. basically a dark projectile on the highway with no lights at all. at least the brakes and steering worked  ) The allen key key part is to unlock the tranny to tow it up the deck onto the truck, but I believe that because it was in 7th gear it doesn't quite function as designed. I had to sit in the car and hold the allen key in unlock position while winching it onto the flatbed, because it kept returning to lock position.

Ciao,
Mike

what was the cause of the electrical failure?

Won't know until next week after they get a chance to look at it. they might start today but I doubt it.
I rolled it off the flatbed and into the dealership at 8:40pm last night so it didn't really have an appointment...

Bloody hell Mcbeee, sorry to hear this. Hope it gets fixed soon.

Not really too worried, still under warranty and was planning on storing it starting this weekend (it's winter starting here verrrrry soon. I count myself lucky to drive it past the 15th Oct.)

It was sort of interesting coasting down the shoulder for a mile with no flashers or lights of any kind....I wonder what the other traffic thought ? I bet there were some choice words flying around :o

Something like, Bloody BMW drivers, think they own the place. :D

Probably more like " Look, another a**hole in a beemer, broken down on the side of the road, Hah Hah".

I did actually end up on the side of the road next to the area of large acreages and estates that the Oil company presidents and the Pro Hockey players own. Lot's of exotics, Vipers and new Bentleys in that area ( I saw a Maserati MC10 there last summer, it passed me coming back from Banff and turned off the road there)

Nasty experience, sounds like you were lucky not to end up off roading  lets hope you get a quick fix and an assurance it can't happen again!

So far they've given it an oil change and a new roof program, no word yet on the electrical failure..... bozos!

UPDATE: A main battery cable fell off somehow (????) and they have to change the Junction Box in the boot (trunk), then reprogram the entire car, then test it and talk to BMW (it's a PUMA case) and see what else needs to be done , then take it to the other BMW shop in town and get the Dinan reflashed, then I get it back. Hopefully tomorrow (Thursday) night. then it will probably snow 8 inches  ( actually the weekend ahead is looking good weather wise  )

I think they are being "nice" because only BMW has worked on it and the battery cable /safety aspect is pretty important.

Well it can happen on other cars.

My Mg montego decided to completely detroy the altinator cap. ironically the altinator was on the way out and caused the battery to open circuit. so bang engine dying lights dying brakes and power steering dying when in the outside lane.

so in the same position with a dead car no lights nothing.

Had a gear box and clutch go on me instantly. nearly thew me through the windscreen. was a bitch to move. had to be dragged.
