Safest way to raise car

I'm wanting to get the car up tomorrow to get to my drain bungs and I'm wondering what's the safest way to go about it (non ramp)?

I have a jack but there isn't the clearance to get it under the car, last time I had to use a mini one to raise it slightly then continue with the proper jack but I didn't get that munch height from it and didn't really feel confident when it came to poking around under the car.

Would a pair of axle stands be better in conjunction with the jack?
 
Drive your car wheels on to a piece of plywood, or maybe a concrete slab or tile. This will raise the body a little and you may then get your jack under.
 
IMO you don't need a lot of height to do the drains. I find it easier if you remove the wheels on each side before starting, and use the central rear jacking point which is easier to get to than the side jacking points (plus you don't need a low profile jack).

Of course, if you are working below the car, you should always use axle stands anyway... in this case, positioned at the rear side jacking points
 
Iv used a Forklift at work before when changing the rear springs. Not always easy to get home at the weekend though lol
