Safest way to accept car payment from Northern Ireland??

Sadly it's probably the usual scam, but there's a guy from NI very interested in the RX8, and he's got quotes to transport it from my house.

He seems reasonably happy to buy without test driving or seeing it (alarm bells!) - I must admit the pictures and description are VERY good :D

...to be sure it is real, what's the safest way to accept payment? Is a bank transfer irreversible?

I'd just avoid that ^_^ don't think I'd take the risk.... cash in hand

bank transfers can be reversed

lovely car btw

Sounds like a gold plated scammer but if you insist on going further into the deal i would want him to post a bankers draft then when he's mailed it ask him which bank he used .?
The sort code for the bank will be on the draft & you can find that from google
I would also ask myself who in their right mind sends a cheque to Mr Nobody for a car he has never seen :|

He could pay cash into your account. No way Olof getting that back.

Incorrect. If the money was stolen or fraudulently obtained (say through hacking someones account or using a 'homeworker' to accept fraudulent payments) the banks will reverse the transaction leaving you without money or car.

As stated, the only safe way is cash, an even then you need to be on the lookout for forgeries.

Not beyond end-of-day, they can't.

Bank drafts, on the other hand, can be (and are) faked.

So, ask the experts... go and speak to your local branch over your concerns, what you have to do to protect your interests so as not to get scammed. Follow their advice 100% and if it goes pear shaped it's their risk not yours and maybe worth insisting on waiting two days to ensure funds are properly cleared.

There's always ways of doing these things outside of cash

Me and PaulG were talking about this the other day when I bought his Zed.

Bank transfers can be reversed if there is proof of fraud, and bankers drafts are really easy to fake (especially considering they're not the kind of thing people come into contact with every day).

Personally I would only ever accept cash. It's one of the faffy things about buying/selling cars privately sadly. Even with modern payment methods, cash is still king.

If I were you I would walk away now. Everything about this sounds dodgy.
