Sacked For Detailing
Well today after just over 1 year’s employment at “Insert Stupid Company Name”, I have been sacked! Why you will ask? Well let me tell you my side from the start!
I applied at “Insert Stupid Company Name” back in 2008 when I worked at a company called “Lovely Previous Employer”, I was offered the job but at the time decided I didn’t want it.
Then back in early 2013 I was offered the job for a second time, I went for my interview and sat and spoke with the manager and even spilled coffee on myself, great start!
At the time there where two separate position and I was offered the more basic role to begin with which I accepted!
On the first day I turn up and was handed my company laptop and docking station and I’m shown my seat. Now at this point it becomes very clear that no one has any idea what they can give me to do, as it quickly turns out there is no training at this huge Insurance Software Company! Frustrated I sit there and read through as much of the company blurb they give me.
The first week passes quite slowly with very little to do, until on the second week I am invited into an office and offered the second more technical job! I think about it closely and believe that this is the right choice and with the right help and support this could be a great move for me! Now the basics of the role in a simple terms was to be the middle man between the big insurers and our technical teams such as EDI and Quotes department and ensure that products where built and made “live” with insurance broker as per the schedule, this included building products for Home, Motor, Commercial Vehicle and Motor Bike. Now this sounds simple but it would turn out for me that it really wasn’t!
12 weeks in and now starting to realise that this no training thing was a bit of a bad idea. The woman sat next to me and currently the only woman who did the job was meant to be training me on how to do everything and finding time was becoming difficult as she was constantly running around like she had been stabbed, screaming how busy she was!
Then one day she went off sick! Not a problem you might think, until she didn’t come back for 4, yes 4 MONTHS. During this time I went through what I like to call employment Hell! I was responsible for all new insurer products, meetings, agenda’s and planning for upwards of 5 projects a month, some of them worth upwards of £12,000 and with strict deadlines in place! The pressure was ridiculous to say the least. Now if you had been there to ask my manager at the time, she would have happily said that there was plenty of support and completely understood that a lot was being asked of me. I’ll make one thing clear! There wasn’t any support! I was on my own most days! My boss left at 12:30pm most days and my other colleague was part time and only worked 3 days a week!
Subsequently my work was terrible but I did the best I could under the circumstance and any problems that did accrue I tried my best to fix them! All this bearing in mind I had still not been set any company objectives or had any sort of performance plan put in place for support.
Then back in January my amazing colleague comes back from being off ill for 4 Months and proclaims “Ah you will be fully trained now!” my heart sinks! The help and support I was expecting when she got back was now going to be history!
Now it’s important to note with this particular company that rules are set yet they only apply to certain members of staff, on any one particular day I could be called “stupid” or have something else horrible said to me in a sly way! There was 2 colleagues that are late by 20 minutes every single day of the week yet nothing is ever done and the time was never made back! I also had one colleague that insisted on slapping me round the head as he went past at any point during the day. You can walk down the office to see people listening to music on their headphones, browsing the net and even texting! Unfortunately for me it seemed that I was to be held accountable for the many!
I was pulled into an office and told that my internet and phone usage was unacceptable. I argued my case and request to see any logs which show me as being on the internet but funnily enough these never appear! SHOCK! I’m told that the company feels that I am not dedicated to them as I seem to more interest in my detailing company that I’m trying to move forward as a hobby outside of work!
I take the mature approach and confirm that I have not been impressed with the level of support and that indeed my performance has struggled. I also confirm that unlike the other in the office/team I should not have been using the internet! Now at this point they give me a disciplinary and strip me of my yearly pay rise! All of which they do rather publicly and make me feel terrible. From that point onwards my company laptop never went near a www. Unless I was on my lunch!
Then today I’m taken into an office and handed a letter confirm that HR have decided to terminate my contract for using the internet and feeling like my interest are not with the company and more with my detailing business! Who knew it was against company policy to be passionate about something other than the hell hole you have to go to everyday to be made to feel stupid and get abused!
So Guys!!! Looks like I’m going full time with R.O Detailing!
