S54 ticking noise developed recently

This ticking has got more pronounced recently especially so after a decent drive with the engine at full temp.

Is the ticking noise an indication of valve adjustment required of is it something more serious developing?

Please advise...the oil is clean and at correct level. Inspection 2 carried out about 37000 miles ...current miles 39,000.

I'd stop driving it until it's been examined by a mechanic. The case hardening on the cam followers can wear through which in turn leads to rapid wear of the cam lobes. It's not clear if it's due to oil starvation to the head or poor manufacturing of the followers, but several ///M owners have now encountered this.
If you catch it early then replacing the followers is enough. If the cams are worn then new cam shafts will be required.
It's difficult to tell from you video (viewed on an iPhone) but I wouldn't drive it until an ///M-experienced mechanic has had a listen +/- inspected the valve gear.
If you're in the South East, given Phil a call at CPC Performance Engineering: http://www.cpcpe.com

Thanks for the advice, i've just taken it for a spin and the noise doesn't seem any worse.

I take your comments onboard and shall book in for an early oil change and valve inspection.

Nissan micra k11 this weeks communte :D

It'll take hundreds or perhaps thousands of miles to deteriorate if that is the problem. Hopefully it just needs re-shimming or better still it's simply paranoia :)

Phew you got me actually bricking it :)

Been looking all afternoon to trade her in too...looking expensive also, think a45 amg.

Just too many problems of late just wondering whats next around the corner...cars getting old now :(

It's really hard to judge from a video (especially on a phone) but, if it's become significantly more tappety, I'd get it checked out. As I said, hopefully it's a healthy dose of paranoia :D

As said it's difficult to tell from the video but that does to my ears at least sound a little noisier than it should be. Who carried out the inspection 2? If it was at BMW it's entirely likely that they didn't do the shimming at all. I would be going back to whoever did the service and ask for clarification on what was actually done. Certainly I'd be getting the cam cover off at a respected indie and take a peek regardless of what you hear back, it's a half an hour's labour max.
A45, really

Would definitely check that valve adjustments were made at insp 2; heard a number of times of them judging it's ok without even removing the cam cover - a sheet showing the gaps before and after is peace of mind. My engine sounded quite tappy on idle prior to a specialist re shimming 13 of the 24 valves; much quieter now.

Just got the motor back from bmw dealers. They found a few valves out of range and shimmied them all for the pleasure of £564.

The ticking noise is still present but definitely alot better. When driving home it sounded okay but the garage said the noise was emanating from the vanos. They said to replace would cost £2500...no thanks.

Yeah apparently so in 12/14 at a really dodgy bmw dealer that i'll never be going back to. I reckon they never even checked them under the inspection 2. Had to ask for the measurements and received them scribbled on scrap piece of paper all uncannily within the range.

Just one of many issues from that dealer....e.g never even secured my oil cap on engine...drove home oil pished all over my engine, never stamped book on inspection 2 etc etc etc

I would be back and asking why they wasnt checked..... And asking for the £564 out of them...

The good news is that that they would (should) have noticed and lifter wear when doing the valve adjustments, the bad news is that you dont seem to be a nearer diagnosing your noise...
