S54 Locking tools

Just planning ahead for checking my Vanos, Cam sprocket bolts and valve clearances, I see in some locking tool kits there seems to be 2 camshaft locking tools...1 that fits across the middle of the head with 2 drop down pins that locate in the camshaft and another that bolts across the rear of the head, they both seem to be doing the same job...... can someone enlighten me as to why this is or am I missing something? Dave.

Can you post a picture of both (in situ) from the ones you're thinking about because that seems a bit unlikely to me.

The one at the back has only 1 ( adjustable??) locking pin???

BMW Technical Information System. The software used for all repair and service information prior to about 2009 when they switched over to the web based system in use now. It outlines all of the tools, procedures and torques for doing work like this - I don't do anything without first consulting it!

I've done a bit more digging and it appears that the other tool is actually for checking the timing. Seems a bit superfluous to me as I'm sure the double locking tool would do the same job unless some knows otherwise???

Do you have a picture of the 'other tool' (locking on the rear) like I asked in the first reply?
I think I know what it is, but to be sure... I need to know what I'm looking at

Or is it the second tool in that picture? That looks like something homemade.

The tool in question is the one at the rear of the picture, I saw a photo of it in situ whilst trawling the net last night.
