S23i Speakers

Hi chaps, a quick question - does the S23i without the upgraded sound system have space for a normal 3 way component system in the factory spaces?

Are there speakers behind the seats also?

There are speakers behind the seats, almost at the sides of the car.

A lot of people don't like the standard sound system but if you get the bass/treble settings just right it sounds pretty good.

The base system in our 2012 has 4 speakers. Two in the doors and two in the front kick panels. EDIT: No it has 6. There are two more in the rear.

There is room for tweeters in the doors, a center speaker in the dash and three speakers in the rear.

There may be some way to mount a sub woofer in the rear as well. Might need to do some cutting though. I haven't looked at the space where the ski pass through would go.

BMW use an odd 3 hole mounting for the speakers. You may be able to make standard components fit but it won't be a simple drop in. There is a company that makes speakers in the 3 hole pattern. I've done some searching and others say they will fit, but need a little modification.

It also appears to be the case that BMW has coded heavy EQ on the radio to make up for the crap speakers. I've done some searching and haven't found anyone who has successfully changed coding on the head unit.

Here is the rear centre speaker mount. You can see the two mounting holes on the left side and if you look carefully the third hole on the right.

Google will find some examples of what other people have done.

It is not that it sounds rubbish, its the power available, which at 25 Watts x 4 is pretty shocking for convertible, this equates to about 87 dB, replacing the speakers with a higher sensitivity can get you about 90 dB maximum

Really? Are you sure its not 6? One in each footwell, one in each door, and one either side of the parcel shelf behind the seats...

Do any know if they've connected all 4 channels to the 4 speakers or we really have 25x2 with the rears not connected?

I suppose I could try the fader, but BMW may have coded that too.

Time to look at the wiring diagrams. . .

It doesn't really matter how many speakers you have as you can only use the power available i.e 100 Watts

I'm not sure. I haven't had near enough time to go snooping around yet.

I'm also having trouble with my hearing. Fingers crossed, looks fixable. Second Dr. appointment Friday.

I've done some searching and some reading.

Rainbow Audio in Germany have speakers with BMWs 3 hole mounting system. They are custom fit for other BMWs but not the e89. I found one post on a another forum where someone said they were close enough and only need a little modification to fit.

They are about £200 for a pair of midranges and tweeters that might or might not fit.

http://rainbow-audio.de/ and look for iq Line speakers.

AIV have various adapters for the 3 hole mount -- but nothing specific to the e89.

The adapters for the MINI or e46 look like they might work. Part number is 43 0831 or 43 0811

This is just a guess. I have no idea if these will work. You'd have to try it or ask the supplier.

Changing speakers without being able to adjust the head unit EQ is a crap shoot too. You might end up with something that sounds worse.

Our Z4 does have 6 speakers.

The 4 mid-range speakers (5 if you have upgraded audio) are all the same part number. Might be easier and even cheaper to buy the BMW parts.

I googled the part numbers to get ballpark ideas on price.

S677A Top HiFi 6513 9141501 $73.55 (DDM Tuning) $90.50 BMW of South Atlanta.
S676A HiFi 6513 9240641 (from 01/2012) 32,91€ (online-teile) older cars have a different part 65139133410 $58.60 BMW of South Atlanta
base audio 6513 9133409 $55.63/$40.06 (DDM Tuning)

The speakers are probably made by D&M PSS. D&M is a Japanese holding company that bought Phillips' car speaker business.

These speakers are also used in the 5 and 7 series

Here is the diagram for the rear.

Only top hi-fi has the woofer. Looks like it fits into a cutout behind the seat.

Top hi-fi also gets a center tweeter. You can see the cutout for it in my photo above.

Thanks for the diagram, any ideas what size sub goes behind the seat? Picking up the car tomorrow and going over to the ICE shop, would prefer to get some decent speakers...looking at The Hertz for the front set up: http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/7967.html

Not sure about rear yet, possibly some 6x 9's and all powered by a decent amp.

Power is so crap. roof down is worse.

Sorry but the basic is so crap its pants and crap.

My first zd had the bose upgarde and it was so not crap. massive sub behind the seat it thumped from behind

the SI sport was quite good

The new zd my HTC desire mobile phone on speaker gives more sound than the stock sound system,.

Every time i start the car I need to mess with the sound. Top down its so crap. If I f**t Its louder than the radio. Infact I have to slow down to hear it,.

On holiday this month and a hire car while z4 was in for repair I had a hire car both had massive sound and even usb and sd card input. We are lucky to get a jack input

Sorry but we need sub mid tweeter and rear speaers, volume enough for top down and usb link as a minimum

I agree and find it more than acceptable;when the roof's down i generally prefer to listen to the engines soundtrack.

Was over at the ICE shop today and will be fitting a two way Rockford Fosgate component set upfront, and a pair of 6x9's behind the seats along with a 4 channel amp...then testing for a few weeks and if bass isn't enough, I'll add a sub under one of the seats. Booked in towards the end of the month to get done. :)
