Rusty hubs

New brake discs all round. Rear hubs already beginning to rust. Asked BMW senior mechanic why they don't come painted. 'Paint would reduce high-ferrous hub cooling.'

That's what he said.

The utter crap they will say.....what a load of bollocks....

I’m glad to see RR have started to paint the calipers and discs on cars now. Picked the wife’s new Evoque up last week and even the outer disc rims are painted, mucho happy.

That's interesting, John. Both seem to have some kind of heat dispersal cover on the disk brake hubs.

Tbh I’m not as yet sure what their role is Buster, I’m thinking ABS sensor nodes, but I’ll definitely look into it. Nice to see them painted though, I’m not sure if BMW are painting the discs and calipers on the new Zed etc, I forgot to look when I had one for the afternoon.... On that note have you tested one yet?

There has to be a mechanical reason for the extra work, required for those castellations. I would agree possibly heat dissipation..

Not sure that would be required on the rear discs though Buzy, it’s the 250bhp petrol car but even so, I doubt heat dissipation is required on the rear. Could well be wrong of course.

The spacing looks way to big for either magnetic or hall effect sensors to work.

I shall report back when correctly informed squire.

Just spent half an hour trawling the net and am none the wiser. Await your findings with interest. :)

I'm going to say not the reluctor ring (ABS). Although hubs are cast with the ring in them - rear Clio hubs for example; they are inboard (on the rear of the hub/disc) - if that is for abs the sensor would have to be mounted with the brake caliper to get near it.

Those calipers don't look painted to me. Possibly some sort of zinc coating maybe.
When I fitted new calipers to the rear of our old mini they looked exactly like that to start with.

It's disk brake hubs I asked about, not calipers.

Sorry meant to quote John.
Just paint your disks and be done with it.
A quick rub down with a wire brush and brush on some caliper paint (sorry mentioned caliper again)
When the originals rust why would you not think that the replacements would rust as well.

Yep the calipers do look zinc coated, I meant the discs alone were painted but didn’t say that.

It’s ermmm actually “Disc”, not “Disk” Buster....

Thanks, Nictrix. Will do.

(As for your last question, brain fade.)
