Rust proofing...

Hi,
Picked up the car last week, from The Paint Shop Pros.
As well as restoring classic-cars, they also offer a rust prevention service. (http://www.thepaintshoppros.co.uk/car-underbody-rust-protection-service/). As standard rust prevention lasts 5-10 years, I thought it a good preventative measure.

The feedback from Gavin there, was the Z4 was in great nick, which only one spot that needed attention, which is always good to hear!
Anyway, the removed all underbody panels, treated all surfaces, included injecting cavity wax, applying Dinitrol 4010 etc.

As a Land Rover owner as well Dinotrol has been used by alot of owners in the past but there is better and cheaper product out there. My 33 year old Land Rover has been treated with product from Buzzweld and has just had a wax coat protection from Lanoguard. Probably struggle to use 1 litre on a Z4 and far cheaper. Does need applying yearly depending on use and does smell like sheep for a few days but so easy to apply with no mess.- worth a look.

Any vehicle I plan on keeping and will use in the winter, I have “rust proofed”. I put rust proofed in quotes because the guy I use calls his undercoating...to avoid, I assume, lawsuits if/when rust does rear its ugly head.

In Pennsylvania (PA) they now often use brine vs just rock salt. The brine gets into places that regular road salt never did. I have a friend who owns a body shop and he said that with the brine now a car will last 4 to 5 years before it is rusted through in places. Looking at the employee parking lot where I work seems to prove out his statement.

Those in PA who are in the know, will buy a used vehicle from a state that gets little to no snow. I did so with my current pickup truck and also the Z. The truck I got undercoated for $700, I have no intention of using the Z in any winter conditions so it gets none and thankfully it looks like it hasn’t been exposed to the garbage in its 17 year lifespan.

Wow that looks amazing! I have a few questions on this though:

• How often does it have to be re-applied?

• Looks like quite a thick layer, do you think the weight added is negligible or substantial?

• If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost?

Thankfully I don't need to use mine over winter. I know some people who always blast their wheels and underbody with hose after driving on salted roads...

It looks like a straightforward job to DIY assuming the product is reasonably safe. Back in the day of rusting Leyland chassis, enthusiasts used to Waxoyl their cars. Is that not a thing any more?
