Rust on rear quarter?

Hey all - I have 2011 23i and have some bubbling on the near side rear quarter. Looks like rust, but someone told me the panels are aluminium. Does anyone have any ideas if this is true or what it might be?

Looks like corrosion, aluminium tends to corrode with what looks like blisters and threads.
Or could be someone spilt hydraulic fluid on it.
Possibly a fault at the paint shop at the factory.

Certainly looks like corrosion/ oxidation,I’m not sure what material the rear wings are manufactured from. I had an Aston vantage which was all aluminium, that had various oxidation/corrosion issues in a couple of areas, which was rectified under warranty. Could well be similar on the zed .

That's a strange place for it to manifest if water has got under the paint IMO

Luckily for you, you may be covered under the corrosion guarantee.

Best to take it to a BMW bodyshop for appraisal if you want it fixed for free.

They won’t do it if the panel has been replaced or resprayed in the past by a none BMW garage, they say they will test this with a paint depth gauge, but in reality, they probably won’t.

When I took my 35i (Dec 2009 car)for similar "corrosion" on the corners of the aluminum roof they did take paint measurement, I watched him do it) before submitting claim to BMW. Got done but took a long time to get approved.

From memory I think its only the bonnet, roof panel and front wings that are aluminium on the E89. Easiest way to check is grab a magnet and see if it sticks.
