Rust behind alloy's on hub

All of the hubs on on my Z are showing a horrible rust colour.......you can see it looking through the alloys.I have heard the only solution is hammerite, but dont want to put this on if the heat created would cause any problems on the paint..........any thoughts?............and is there a better solution rather than painting?.............thanks

No better solution as such, no, wire brush off all the rust and paint. Hammerite is OK (as it is rated up to a certain temp) but if you're worried, buy some VHT paint (very hight temp) it designed for BBQ's and stuff, so your hubs would be just fine.

Had same problem on mine, took my wheels off and painted the hubs with siver hamerite caliper paint and did the calipers as well. Dont forget to put some copper slip on the hubs when you put the wheels back on

I used some chrome paint from B and Q. Seems to withstand the heat well. Just make sure to give the disc a good clean before sparying on.
Also used similiar brand paint, (the colour looked titanium) for the calipers, as the front is alloy and rear steel. They start to look untidy after a short while if not painted.

I swear by this stuff

Spray into a small container an paint on with a brush as its quite expensive . I use it on all my vehicles and boat. The problem with paint (hammerite is very good and withstands heat) is that it can build up and not give a metal to metal contact on hubs and wheels.
This is quite important for alignment and keeping nuts and bolts at their correct torque setting.

I used a Dremel and it's copper wirebrush end to get the hubs back as they were. Could even see the what I guess was the part number appear again and looked ok. Nice and shiney.

I was aiming for black wheels though so I painted a couple of coats of black brake caliper paint on which worked well.

Using harsh wheel cleaners will exacerbate rusty hubs, so if you buy from a dealer you can bank on them being rusty. I've never suffered from this :) , the hubs on the Z3 looked virtually new before I had new discs fitted after 11 years.
