Running rich...

Went to look at a potential E85 purchase the other day, one owner car with under 65k Miles.

Physically in nice condition, but service history was all independent from new in 2007. Original bill of sale etc, all in a folder.

Car was cold when I got there and on initial start up there was some black smoke and it smelt rich. The revs did pick up for a short time before it settled into a nice steady idle.

Does the straight 6 suffer any issues with valve stem seals, MAF’s etc, or is it likely to be that it’s just needs a decent service, new air filter element etc? Is it due a service.

Over-fuelling can lead to bore-wash, so I feel this is something to be concerned about.

Any thoughts or other suggestions?

Many thanks.

Which engine? I’m guessing 3.0Si which are not known for valve stem oil seal wear. MAF a possibility but most cars run rich when cold.

Reset the mpg thing on the stalk and take it for a run.

If you get the stated mpg for the car then it'll be fine.

Probably needs a service too.

This particular car was a 2.5i

What's the service history?

What oil is in it?

What fuel has been getting used?

How has it been used? Daily? Weekly? A few times when dry?

What's the MOT history like?

Without seeing the car it's difficult to know!

Thanks for the input on this one,

It’s Moot now as it has sold this evening to someone else.

I wasn’t completely sold on the car, as it was a 2.5 non-si, but it was local and in decent condition with a hard-top.

It was also one owner from new, and the chap seemed very genuine.

It wasn’t meant to be, but I don’t feel especially disappointed... which tells me all I need to know

There's always another car.

Check here on the forum in the For Sale section.

There's plenty of information on common features (faults) that come up on all the engines here on the forum including the other consumables like Springs, Window Regulator, ABS Pump, Water Pump, Roof Motor, Oil use!

Don't think twice about travelling for the right car!

2.5i should not be top of anyone’s list imho, it really got shortchanged on power compared to the Si.

It’s not top of my list, it was simply that it was close, with a hardtop and one owner from new... so felt it was worth a peep!

Are you anywhere near Kent OP?

This 3.0Si is located there:- https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=117596
