Running on Fumes

I remember that - 800 mile round trip on one tank, Jeremy driving London to Edinburgh and back - Even Audi said it couldn't be done but he managed it. Diesel A6 I think... might have been an A4.

twas an A8 TDi V8 with twin turbos which made it more impressive... i saw the repeat recently.

amazed me how much the electricals make a difference.. no heaters, no heated seats, no aircon..

i managed 29.7mpg on a 40mile country run last night following the same principals. Can't seem to break 30+.. :|

I knew it was a big audi

electricals all place a drain on the car - but would be a less comfortable place without them...

he didn't actually say, but im guessing it was the usual 62mph. very impressive really.. you got the impression that he was freezing cold and didn't dare turn on the heater.. and in the end it's a good job he didn't.

but to do 800 miles on the tank of a twin turbo v8.. is impressive.

Had mine down to 8 miles showing the other week. Worst was when I was coming back from the continent and my mate in his 75litre tanked Boxster :x was insisting on cruising at a speed that was making my trip tell me I wasn't going to make it back to the island.

Jezza basically maxed the A8 by never going above 1000/1500 revs so his speed would have been whatever that equates to with the Audi's gearing.

Mine gets to zero miles left at about 120 miles. One of my fuel level sensors doesn't work, so a full tank reads at about half a tank, so when i'm at zero miles I know that it's time to fill again.

If I fill up close to zero miles, I can only get about 48 litres into a 55 litre tank so running 10-15 miles after zero still gives a very generous safety margin before I'm risking running low. On a virually new car with a plastic fuel tank I'd hope not to have any rubbish in there however there must be filters to prevent anything getting through.

I find the Z4 Coupe the perfect GT car except for the pathetic range of less than 400 miles or so. I'm not sure why they decided to give a sporty car a boot the size of a saloon and a fuel tank the size of a shopping car but I guess one argumment is that it keeps the weight differential between full and empty to a minimum.

mine has been sitting outside for 2 days now with the fuel level about 10 miles less than when the "---" came on.. must do something about it..

Bit tight again today - flatlined a few metres from the petrol station after reading 6 miles left. Again didn't quite get 50 litres in the tank so BMW must be leaving a fair safety margin, not that I'm prepared to test it out. Journeys I'm doing at the moment always seem to leave me needing to fuel up on the way to work which I never have time to do. More forward planning required!!

Same as the M5 - it has the same size tank as a 520i to keep the weight down but means you can only do 200-odd miles before a fill.
