Hi there, my first post here, was a member of z4um buy hear that's no longer available!! Anyhow I used to own a 56 reg z4 2.0 m sport so know the running costs for that, but can you tell me running costs below please?

2.2 - mpg around town
2.5 - mpg around town
3.0 - mpg around town??

I'm looking to spend less than 11k this time and I'm hopeful of a part ex on my seat leon cupra, 240bhp 2007 car that I can get min of 12k... I get about 26mpg around town and just need to know if the 3 cars above will be better or the same?

You will easily get the same around town i get that from my 2004 3.0 Auto no probs and could prob get a little more i do not drive with fuel saving in mind

Quality so 3.0 is way forward then? I had a look on parkers and says combined 31 for 2.5 and 3.0 so surely if they are same buy the 3.0??????? Also is tax any more and insurance, what are the 3.0 like to insure?

Most of my driving is around town, and I don't get anyhere near 26mpg, more like 21/22. It could well be my heavy right foot though. I have a 3.0 SMG

Regards
Rob

3.0 is 1 group higher than 2.5

I am getting 32mpg out of my 2.5, but that is on a mixed run with some town, rural and MWay.

Interesting observation on the MPG of 2.5 vs 3.0 - leading to the conclusion that the 3.0 was the way to go. I thought that as well, but then discovered that to get a mint, nearly new example the 3.0 was hugely more expensive than the 2.5. So if you can find a like for like spec car in 3.0 over the 2.5 and afford the difference in purchase price then the cost of insurance and RFL shouldn't be an issue really.

As said i do not drive with fuel saving in mind but still return around 26 or a little under even with sport mode on but thats only going by the onboard computer.

There's a mixture on autotrader 3.0 and 2.5 and price is not agreat difference, I'm sure insurance isn't going to be loads more than my grp 17 cupra, and it was only £200 more for my 2.7 boxster last year, although that was grp 18 and 26k?

I think your history of cars will leave you with a pretty good understanding of insurance costs - not like you are going from a 1.2 polo to a Z in one go :D

On the ads in Autotrader - when you are comparing the difference on 2.5 vs 3.0 in the ads make sure you are looking at similar specs. It is easy to get suckered into the lure of the bigger engine but overlook the lack of nice toys.

Enjoy your search - new cars are the only thing that bring on that "Christmas feeling" for me! :D

Me too mate, thanks although it would be nice to see what some of the 2.5 boys get??? Turbo cars really do drink petrol and I'm supposed to get 35mpg combined!!

ONe of my friends has a 2.9 turbo leon Fr, and another one has an Audi A3 2.0 Turbo, both of them struggle to get near 30 on a combined cycle.

I manage 35mpg combined in my 3.0 Z4, thats with mixed dual carriage way, town, B roads and country lanes. The trip computer has never dropped below 35mpg average since I have had it, and I dont drive slowly all of the time.

I think the 3.0 is group 19 insurance, but based on your past cars the jump should be negligible.

35mpg work commute. M6 corridor and B roads

Around town 26-28mpg

Long distance mtway journey with cruise on. 40mpg is easily attainable for me. And I don't hang around!

Mines a manual, so it is more economical than auto in my experience.

Buy one!

I've not had a chance to do some decent motorway testing yet, but I'm hoping that the large 3.0L engine will make the MPG jump from 60mph / 70mph / 80 mph on the motorway very negligible. Has anyone done any "scientific" experiments to the different mpg/s at motorway speeds? (on the autobahn of course, as speeding is of course illegal!).

Wow so they are quite good on juice then, better than any Porsche and any hot hatch (above 200bhp) thanks guys, next job is to find a 3.0 below 11.5k and get my car sold. Thanks for the info

I'll post this again...had cruise on most of the way..

Commute to Essex: 600 mile round trip i think (cant remember)

Never went below 70mph apart from stupid SPEC cameras. Was more 75-80mph..

Ignore the Avg Speed in the pic as i have NEVER reset that..

The car does seem to over-read the MPG a bit. Maybe by a couple of MPG's.

The other thing to note is there is round town driving, then there is crawling round London at 2mph for two hours a day. A big difference that im sure all my fellow londoners will agree with

I think as others have alluded to it largely depends on the mix of driving you do. I have a 2.5si and used to get 30-33 mpg mixed driving. Since moving I only travel 2 miles at 30mph so struggle to see 24mpg. On a long runs at sensible speeds I had had 37mpg 60/70 mph and 33mpg at 70/80mph. 37mpg with the roof down as well - the 6th gear in the 3.0 and facelift cars helps a lot.

I have a heavy right foot but use cruise control on dual carriageways etc.

Hope that helps
