Runflats

Hello, Hello,

I'm considering ditching the runflats on my 08 Z4 2.5, rears just about done, fronts 60% done

Can anyone offer any advice on what needs to be considered?
Ride
Handling
Resale Value
What if I get a puncture?
Do I need to do all 4 at once

etc etc...

as said lots of inof on here, but change all four, a set of Flaken 452's will cost around £400.

Keep the front so you can put back on later when you sell if required only needing to buy the rears.

Get yourself a small 12v compressor and some tyre weld or the BMW mobility kit in case of a puncture.
 
Yeah as a budget option you could do that, or you could do it properly and get some michelin ps2 runflats.

I mean why buy a car thats been designed for runflats then put non runflats on it?
 
I dont think the car was 'designed' for runflats exactly. Also putting on PS2's and 'doing it properly' is surely a matter of opinion.
Rawsco there are plenty of posts about this with lots of different views, read em and make up your own mind.

Yes you can use that foam stuff depending on how bad it is and ruin your alloys.

And yes it is only my opinion but if you cant afford to maintain a car then why buy it in the first place.
 
A lot has been said about runflats, i understand the suspension set up was designed ( with Bridgestone) to run on runflat tyres, ok we are all aware of the traits associated with these tyres, but i have driven both set ups, and am amazed at the way the car handles with runflats compared to normal tyres, ok they are pricey but in my opinion well worth the money , and who are we to question BMW design after they spent shedloads of money on development/testing . JUST MO :driving: 8)

The Z4M has non-runflats and no spare wheel either - it's purely a cost/weight/packaging issue.

That's not really correct. BMW were more concerend about packaging (their term for fitting all the components into a given space) on the Z4 and by using run flats it allowed a low boot profile, placing the battery in the rear and to assist 50:50 weight distribution. Sure the suspension was tuned for the RFT's but they were an early generation and even BMW admit they were a compromised design. It's not by accident that the ///M filled the boot with a battery and a compressor/goo and put conventionall tyres on.

Sure the later genratation RFT's are better, but we have a way to go yet and for every person who suggest performance is better on RFT's there will be 50 that disagree, me included.

Just because it costs the consumer a lot of money doesn't mean it costs BMW anymore than a standard tyre.

Anyway I was talking about the reduced cost of not having to supply a 5th wheel :wink:

What roads do you drive on? Do you only drive on a smooth paved closed track? In the real world I spend more time fighting the steering wheel and rattling my teeth than noticing any way the car handles with RFT's. I want to "Feel" the road when I drive, not crash into it.
Who are we to question BMW? We are the paying customer, We gave them the shedloads of money that they used to sign an exlusive deal with Bridgestone to promote their horrible RFT's. I'm just thankful there are so many decent non RFT options. I'll take the Mobility kit and risk a flat, thank you very much. (I honestly in 25 years of driving have never had a blowout flat tire. Usually just get slow leaks.) - FYI, not just MHO.
 
I had tramlining with my non RFTs on my 325Ci. I'm gonna get PS2 ZP as I have in tire TPMs and they don't react to goo very well. Frankly, have no problem with the tire/springs/EPS or clutch.
 
Iagree, tramlining is not about r/f's , i've had it on many previous cars , different tyre manufacturers = different tyre patterns, any way i enjoy the drive, after all it is a sports car not a limo !!!! :rofl: :driving:
 
I don't think anyone is saying runflats cause tramlining in general. Just that the original runflats on the Z4 are prone to tramlining really bad on the Z4.
