How good are they, on my old Z with 18" wheels/M-susp/452's on, the ride was still harsh, but my new iS has 19" on (9"wide on the rear) and when it's in sport mode (M-susp) the comfort level is a little bit better, and when it's in standard setting the car just floats over bumps, fantastic

Run flats have sure come on over the years and I will buy same when it's time for new tyres. :)

Ive been trying to put that point across for 18 months :D

Finding them good on mine also. I think it's more to do with the new design of suspension than the tyres though.

I'm about to replace my rears and I intend on getting the same make as the OEM.

I've noticed this as well on my new Z. I've had run-flats on other vehicles and it's been a horrible, kidney crunching ride. I'm now a week + in the new Z and I have to say that the Bridgestone run-flats are not causing me any grief!

As you've pointed out however, it may have to do more with changes to suspension etc, vs. changes in run-flat technology or possibly a combination of both! Admittedly, i was a little concerned knowing the car was shipping with these tires, but now, no concerns at all.

It's just like everything - progress and development over time improves technology. Initial run-flats were shite, no other word for them. And BMW as early adopters of this were stuck initially using the crap run-flats. But later/newer design of runflats were much better.

In this case I guess it's more of a case of the E89 being softer suspended than the E85/E86.

I tested the E89 35i at the weekend and was also impressed with the ride. Couldn't really try the handling with the rep in the passenger seat but it all felt good.

This as said above is a combination of suspension changes, tyre improvement a slightly softer grown up car and just a decade of knowledge and learnings. Give it another decade and spares on cars will be about as common as carbs and points

Good to hear that as I always like the idea but the reality for 1st gen Z4's was just terrible.

Comparing the old Z4 with worn parts and a totally different setup on 452's vs what is essentially a new car on RFT is going to be misleading though.

May as well compare the old Z4 with a new SLK for what it is worth wrt ride comfort.

Not saying you are wrong, but until you try a non-rft on the new car, you haven't really done a fair comparison :)

BUT, the RFT's have come on. The old Bridgestones are really terrible no doubt about it. The ZP Michelin are probably leagues ahead... but NOT bloody cheap... eek!

breaker have u really used a fll set of rears already? how many miles???

Yes. 12,600 miles. Down to the wear indicators. Having a new set of rears fitted tomorrow. Ouch!! :o

I was told yesterday that my M Sport Roadster has been built (after 10 working days) and is due for inspection before shipping to UK. I will soon find out if M Sport suspension on E89 will match E85 Sport model. :)

Breaker: Are you putting Bridgestone on, not Michelin PS2/PS3 ZP?

Same as OEM, Bridgestone Potenza's, as I'm not changing the fronts as they are OK.

I wonder if changing brands would improve the mileage (wear) ? I have 5000 miles on mine and obviously they look OK, but what will they look like in another 10K ?

I ran Blizzaks on the back of my M3 with a different brand of tires on the front for a while (due to necessity) and the car was fine , handled great etc.

I had my new rear tyres fitted on Friday and forgot the golden rule on Saturday about running in new tyres! Had a spirited drive on Saturday afternoon. Going into a sweeping bend on a road I use every week the car went into a slight "tank slap" effect!! Felt like I'd had a puncture!! Got home and checked the wheels for fit and tightness. OK. Checked the tyre pressure the following morning and they were OK! Guess it was just too much too soon on new tyres!
