Runflat Question

Hello all,

quick question, Mum's 335i e92 (MY2010) went in for an MOT. Was told that the rear tyres had an advisory.

Car has done 17k and the rear tyres have already been replaced once.

I can understand if say I had the keys to the car as to the significantly premature tyre wear, but it's just my mum driving the car on a 12 mile round trip monday - friday.

I understand the tyres are overpriced and under perform (comparatively to say vreds) but what would you all advise? Did some research and one suggestion was to reduce the negative camber to ease tyre wear.

Was thinking of emailing the dealer principle as the car is currently with Sytner.

Is this an advisory on edge wear or general tyre wear? Is it regarding tread depth or condition of the tyre?

A 335i, with the torque it has, will get through rear tyres. My 35i had its rears replaced at 15K, fronts at 19K.

Camber can be adjusted if the wear is on the shoulder of the tyre. Bear in mind though, the less camber there is on a rear wheel drive car, the more the car is likely to oversteer when power is applied when turning.

As every tyre, road and driver is different, some will get better wear than others.

Rears (not runflats) on my 535D last 10,000 miles, and that's not with rally-driving! But most of my mileage is twisty, hilly roads. Would expect more if mainly motorway.

Tell your mum to go easy on the loud pedal, especially when accelerating.

Where was it MOT'd, and have you had a proper look at the tyres?

Latest set of tyres on my zed have done c.10k miles and need changed.

My mum actually drives sensibly! (Don't understand how it's possible but there you go!)

Been MOT'd at Sytner High Wycomb. Going to have a look at the car now.

My mother in laws e93 goes through rear tyres like you wouldn't believe. It's only a 320i and she drives like a granny (because she is). Just seems to be a feature of the car.

its true.

while talking to the service guy, he was so sure that we had replaced the front tyres given only 2mm of tread wear on them from new.

needless to say one of the mechanics went to look at the tyre and both the front were dated to september 09! That shut him up quite promptly.

After some logic that only a parts salesman could have (aside from all the praise I've seen about Jamie at Sopers), we've decided to go for a set of Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta on the rears, keep a spare tyre in a can in the car and get an e46 17' space saver.

Note: the parts guy would sell a space saver wheel but said he wouldn't supply a tyre even though it was up. Tyre is about 55 from camskill so about 90 all in for a space saver with tyre. Not too bad.
