Run Flats..........

My Z4 has 11000 miles on the clock and i was wondering how long i have left before they need changing ( on average) i appreciate its dependant on how you drive but any guide would help. Also is it better when i change to get normal tyres rather than run flats.....how many miles can you get from them when flat anyway?............thanks

My fronts lasted 18k miles and rears 12k miles but then I don't drive like a grandad and the power can remove a lot of rubber.

The tyres on my first z4 had done about 23k when I traded it in, and still had some rubber left. But then I certainly aint a boy racer!

On my old z4 2.5 rears 20K fronts 30K. But one rear set lasted less possibly due to poor batch. One also note is alignment, if this goes out then can scrub them quickley. The fronts are also prone to feathering on the edges, possibly due to owners complaining that the car constantly turns inwards so I have heard that BMW have compensated for the road at the expense of the tyres. so my last fronts had good tread in the main but questionable.

last new model 3.0 new shape (taken from the BMW service sheets)
10K fronts 6mm rear 5mm
15K fronts 5mm rear 3mm
20K new rears
29K fronts 3.2mm rear 4.8mm FRONTS FEATHERING
31K new fronts

Just do some simple maths. Tyre starts at 8 and need changing at 2 (min legal 1.6) so you have 6mm to use.
Measure tyres and working front the lowest result across the tyre calc what % left or used.
Simple that if a tyre has 5mm you used half and have same mileage left, less a bit as tyres seem to wear the latter parts quicker and some area always hits minimum sooner.

You must be all driving like a sissy
I'm on my fourth set of fronts and third set of rears in 10k miles in four months :driving:

I would rather sissy (correction intelligent) drive than waste money on tyres at that rate, your tyre supplier must be rubbing their hands together with glee :D

Tim.

Blimey! Is your Zed front wheel drive? :poke:

My car is so addictive, it's taken over my life :|
If I totted it up, I've probably spent what I paid for the car again :o that's no exaggeration, could be more
Loving every minute of it :)

I had a Quaife diff fitted and it puts the power down but driving hard overheats the fronts and wears them quicker.

Surely you must partake in track days to go through that much rubber?
Yes I've done a few.....
4 at Cadwell Park
2 at Snetterton
2 at Brands Hatch
1 at Bedford Autodrome

Next one Oulton Park on Wednesday.

On the plus side Michelin are giving me my next set free :)

For sale 3.5is 1 loving owner.

Now that will be a trading standards case.

Quadracer have you thought of non run flats and different rims for track days.

May be worth bulk purchasing the rubbers you could start a group buy on the web site lol.

My 1st zd went off road and cost 14K to repair even last 10 plate ate a spade in the road which cost me £1.8K could never do a track day in my own zd in case it decided to go green and eat grass, would love too.

Olton Park, I had a free day out and I drove a celica 190 6 times round th track, and 3 with a pro, I got one 3 months later. good fun nice track, couple of fun dips.

Touch wood :)

I've never had an accident in my 31 years of driving and I dare say I've done well above average mileage. Only ever had one insurance claim and that was for a windscreen.

I love the track and feel safer than on the roads. I'm not driving along thinking is that bus going to pull out, is that bike going to wobble and then the oh sh*t that car in front stopped at the roundabout for no apparent reason!

Quadracer, I remember seeing a video of a 35iS being raced against some suitable opposition over 10 laps or so, car did fine until the brakes overheated. There was about 6 over similar performance cars by different manufacturers and the zed was the first to suffer.

How's does yours fair?

I have only had them 2 in 26, all in a zd

A car pulled out in front of me down a country road where I was enjoying 50mph, so I was slowing down then a stupid lady pulled out, she just went through a stop junction thinking it was ok I may have been ok but suddenly she noticed me and jammed on the brakes wtf. I swerved passed her on the left, she had also pulled out in front of a car on the other side of the road so had to go on the grass verge, a quick bit of off road traveling at 30mph. Lucky that I was slowing down or I would have flipped the car over as the verge was at an angle. She was done for dangerous driving.

Second one I was overtaking someone who was plodding at 40 down a 50 only to find a shovel right in the middle of the road as I was passing them, too late for me to do much than go over it an hope for the best.

One last scare was last year going to the airport on the M6 early morning, following a car and the plonker went over some steelwork, he must have seen the thing before he went over it I herd a bang from his car saw the metal work and lucky nothing was in lane 3 so I managed swerved but ran over it just on the passenger side wheels and I thought oh not again. I overtook him and noticed a fair bit of damage was done and he began slowing and getting to the hard shoulder. Got to the airport (was only a few miles away) and checked for damage nothing worried a bit on holiday but all was ok.

The standard brakes are really good but on the track they were rubbish. I was wearing a set of fronts in one day on the track. They heat up too quickly mainly due to the weight of the car.
I upgraded my brakes to Alcon 6 pots with yellow Pagid pads, braided hoses and 5.1 dot fluid shortly after buying it. The stopping power is much better, no fading (at least at 20 minutes) and the pads however are expensive last a lot longer.
