Run Flat Tyre Life

Just had our Series 1 MOT'd and it picked up an advisory on one front Bridgestone R/F tyre, went to price a pair up from our usual supplier and he looked up the last time it was fitted and informed me it was over 5 years old (we don't do a lot of miles) and should be replaced regardless of tread depth.

Question is whether there is any way of determining tyre deterioration (apart from obvious side wall cracking) or is there a golden rule that states tyres have a life of 'X' number of years and replace them regardless. I trust the dealer by the way and he could well be right.

Have a look at this:

Lots more on the internet - but 5 years seems to be the average in terms of 'life' if used in normal circumstances (general use, commuting etc)'

Many thanks for the link Alan, some useful data on there, seems my dealer was right.

Bought my z a 2005 last year with 27000 miles that still had original runflats all round never had a car with tyres that old before needless to say they came straight off. :driving:

I've had dealers saying "oooh, the casing has gone on these" and then had me feel for lumps which I couldn't feel, so I am always sceptical of their techniques.

Not that my tyres last very long these days anyway

Have the standard RFT's on mine & seen all the recommendations for swopping them out to Falkens, F1's etc. Driving like a loon now, trying to wear them out so I can fit some proper rubber
