went for a run to somerset on sunday in the 335 mile after mile of lovely smooth tarmac much of it new. the roads there have only about 5% of the damage they have in kent surrey sussex with very little evidence of snow/ice damage. to me this proves that the roads around here have suffered from a lack of maintenance and the authorities have bben negligent in their duties to keep the surface safe and useable. i recently had two tyres ruined on a trailer through a crater. i made a claim but guess what kcc reckons they are doing all possible to repair the roads. yes they filled that hole in 3 days after i reported the damage but only that one they did not touch the hundreds of others in the same road and still havent. now every day more appear unlike the road repair crews. typical of the country as a whole i think, disintegrating!

Which way did you go? I went back down to Devon the other week, along the A303, which was a great drive

Sounds like Kent is in a similar state to Oxfordshire

went down the 303 would have been nice to have taken the z but her indoors says its not comfortable for her, typical woman!

Certainly true of this part of Kent. My (typically suburban) road had a hole which is only passable at walking speed.

Hmm, must get on the 303 to Dorset soon :)

Whats the driving time to somerset sounds like a plan as i fancy a few nice drives in the Z this year with a stop overnight.

Your not wrong about the roads in Kent :x :x lumps of tarmac missing everywhere huge pieces looks like King Kong has been for a stroll i went out for a run a few weeks back West Malling way really bad nearly ended up in the woods the Z was getting thrown around so much.

I've not been to Somerset yet, but from W Malling to Shaftesbury, where I've been a few times, best time will be 2 hrs as it's 2 1/2 from Staplehurst. You just don't want to be trying to back up past Stonehende on a Sunday pm.

Done it a few time recently to Plymouth for work, about 4 hours from Eastbourne, East Sussex, so depening whee you are in Kent 5 hours very possible, and of course with all the caravans around now summers coming even longer.

5 hours :o can be in France in 2 hours from my house and then its not that far to Belgium or Germany

I'm from Taunton originally so I thought I'd point out some good ones for you all.

When I go to see the parents I try and to do this or parts of it as I have friends in Porlock. Fantastic! http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&s...-3.446617&sspn=0.155372,0.307961&ie=UTF8&z=12

The A39 is a great road as is the B3224 (no cams) with plenty of twisty turns, ups and downs and overtaking straights, obviously you will need to be comfortable with high hedges to enjoy it safely and sensibly but the vision is generally good on this route once you're in the groove. There are quite a few variations on this loop as you'll see from the map, I couldn't be bothered to plot them all but as long as you have the A39 coastal stage you can come back via other fun roads. Another good recommendation is the A3072 between Tiverton and Crediton - I always take driving duties on the way to the grandparents :D

if anyone is keen for some nice driving in somerset the road from tiverton to minehead is voted on of the best driving roads there it.

and im local so can come along for the blast too :)
