Rumour - Manual Transmission in the Supra

So apparently the Supra might get a manual in 2022, IF thats true do you think that BMW will equal that in the G29 and if they do would you consider a manual over the auto?
 
G29 has manual option in certain market. Only for the most entry level 20i sport version. However, despite a lot of voice saying no manual is the deal breaker for a sport car, the reality is BMW only sold 2 manual G29 in 2 years in Australia (https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/07/19/bmw-australia-cancels-the-z4-manual-after-selling-2-units-in-2-years/).

About the supra, not sure which version gets the manual. If it's like z4 that only the most entry level one can have it, then I think the story will be similar to the z4.

Personally, I won't go for the manual m40i even if there is one. If it has to be a manual sport car, I may go for the mx5 over the z4. Also, when I ordered the z4, I also looked at 718 cayman GTS 4.0 and I specifically told the sales person that it must be PDK and I don't care about other options.

Apparently the manual is to be bolted to the 3l Supra but again all total rumour and speculation

I think car modifier will like it as it's easier to make manual to take more power and torque. The AT in z4 and supra is zf 8hp51 (3rd gen zf 8speed auto). The labelled torque acceptable by the gearbox is around 500NM - 550NM which matches what the B58 engine can produce. However, the question is how many people out there want to push the B58 to 600, 800 or 1000hp?

Sod the manual but nice colour!

Can't see (unless they package it into a Z4M marketing pitch) the manual going down well with what appears to be the typical G29 owner? :tumbleweed:

The Supra guys always were a bit more 'divine wind' :thumbsup:

The AY is very sensitive to sunlight..goes from almost a lemon yellow to a duck egg yellow with the change of light..getting some lovely colours around here with the sun at low angles..

If it wasn't a tin top then I would contemplate opening the vaults, can't see SWMBO seeing this baby as a Volvo XC70 replacement..
 
I’ll believe it when I see it. And even when I see it, it will still be a BMW in drag, with none of that legendary Toyota reliability being offered. The Supra also uses old BMW iDrive 6 tech, and with iDrive 8 currently being rolled out, who would really want an older iDrive 6 system.

Key reason why I went for z4 instead of supra. Also an excuse to convince myself not to spend more money on 718 cayman GTS 4.0
 
It will be a miserable day when I buy another Automatic car - it'll only happen when I'm not capable of working 3 pedals.

I hope Toyota do offer a manual Coupe - I'm rather partial to them! :lol:

Agreed, those days are over :)

Paddle shift is always available on autos, I use it occasionally when the mood takes me.
 
I used to be a diehard manual fan but decided to dare into auto territory with a VW R32 I bought in 2006. I hated it and after two years returned to the manual fold. In 2013 I bought a 330D xDrive and the auto box was miles ahead of the R32. I've had a 335D since and now own a G29 3.0 and can safely say I'll never bother with a manual again.
 
People are vilified for suggesting that an auto is a viable option for ‘sporting’ motoring..

I’ve never yet known someone who has a ZF8HP box and decided that a manual is a better option.

I’d always have chosen manual previously but in the correct modes for what I want to do my G29 is a delight to drive.

On our last forum run out I was using the paddles a lot more than before. Don’t know if that was the type of roads, me getting more used to the car, or the rate we were travelling at but from my point of view I don’t think having a manual would’ve made it any more enjoyable an experience or would’ve allowed me to cover the ground any quicker.

I think I was covering the ground at a reasonable pace in my auto as manual driving as [ref]idej_z4[/ref], could confirm as we spent most of the weekend in tandem :oops: :driving: :lol:

And yes that’s IN tandem not ON a bloody tandem :rofl:
 
Like Argyll Andy I've had decades of manuals..some of the DSGs brought the balance of decision making on a par but the box in the E89 is a honey. The G29 version seemed to be at least as good, I couldn't tell on my test drives whether it was better..it had several extra modes, not sure what they all did. :thumbsup:

I find that I only have to use the paddles if I'm trying harder Andy? :poke: :driving: :rofl:
 
I remember years back giving my old dad a hard time when he switched to auto, now I understand why he did it, at 70+ it's a welcome option.

My years living and working in the USA also gave me an appreciation for autos.

99% of the time I drive using the paddles rather than in full blown auto mode :thumbsup:
