Rubbing/Noise coming from rear

I've started to notice a strange noise coming from the drivers side rear of the car. It usually only happens when going round a tight roudabout a low speed. Its sounds like something rubbing or flexing. Under normal driving the car appears to be fine. Does anyone have any ideas what it might be before I take it to the dealer to have a look.

Could be as it ties in with when I had the new disks and pads fitted on the rear. Is it an easy thing to check/put right?

Sorry I cannot offer an answer but am interested in others comments as I suffer exactly the same noise. I have noticed that it seems to stop if I apply the handbrake briefly whilst moving. Does it sound like anything to be really worried about and if not does it seem like something an average "do it yourselfer" mechanic should be able to sort?

Not sure if it you are describing the same noise I heard from my car, when I first test drove it. Similar circumstance....very slow cornering that resulted in an odd rubbing noise from the rear. The non-BMW dealer I bought it from, sent it to a local BMW shop for repair as part of the purchase agreement. The tech at BMW said that it was the diff that was making the noise and that the M's are known to make this noise if they sit for as little as a week, without being driven. Something about the fluid between the plates dissipating (sorry, I am not a technical guy at all). Tech advised that the solution was to make several low-speed turns, until things became lubricated again. My car has not made the noise since, although it's only been a week since I bought it!

It is likely to be your diff it is quite common. You have 2 options you can live with the noise or get an additive to the fluid from BMW. They have a tsb on the issue for the M3.

My car is making all sorts of noises at the moment. The diff noise comes and goes, seems worse on hot days also. Really can sound quite loud sometimes, and the rubbing noise comes from either side, usually depending on which direction I'm turning. Even driving straight the noise does come and go sometimes. Will be getting it checked over again soon. Last time BMW recommended the additive mentioned by someone else but I'm trying to avoid using that.

A rubbing or scraping noise that comes and goes, especially when turning may be a very simple problem - small stones inside the handbrake drum. I had this issue for a year or so, would come and go, usually during or after making a turn, would disappear if I pulled the handbrake on slightly when on the move. It seems as though there is enough of a gap between the brake backing plate and the handbrake drum inside the rear disc brake, that small stones can find their way in.

I have exactly the same issue, quite a loud grinding metallic sounding noise low speed cornering (usually worse when turning left). I took it in to my usual rubbish dealer and was fobbed off with a quote for new pads and discs on the rear! Car only done 18k and largely driven sympathetically, loads of life on the front and rear pads and discs in great condition (never even replaced the fronts!) . What exactly do they want me to pay £450 for then?

I had no idea about the diff problem. Anyone know a dealer in the Berkshire/Surrey/Hants area that are educated enough to recognise this issue?

I know what will happen otherwise - i'll suggest it to the service advisor and he'll say "nah wont be that!"
