RR and chipping

Had word with my nearest rolling road specialist tuning place and they said a superchip would increase power by 15bhp but would cost £350 plus RR session and anywy they don't have the kit to get into the bm ecu so its not worth it.

I had a remap, with a 15bhp gain, but for me it was more about a better throttle response, I do feel a differende there

this is how its done in todays world...

you get software for your laptop, plus a usb to obd cable, you save your stock tune to the programme and you load the ESS tune to the car.... Job done. They can add all sorts of stuff during this point, sport button memory, shift lights, raised rev limiter... hell you can even ask them for a valet map so the car wont rev past 2k revs if you ever leave it places where someone where your worried about joy riders.

Byron,

What has ESS done for them to be able to remap the ECU to tune your car for a SC, water and methanol when many other tuners can't touch the E85/86 ECU with no extras?

chipping..... havent hard of that term since my fiesta Rs turbo days......

its a great village not far from me :D http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chipping,_Lancashire

to OP . my remap chap reckons only throttle response would be noticeable from a chip or remap ? the extra power is unlikely to be felt under foot :?
the noise of a freeflow exhaust & performance air filter will probably make it feel faster :P

Was told by the R R specialist that its a waste of time and cash putting an aftermarket air filter on too , 5bhp is not worth the cost and its a hasle re oil the filter. So we can't do much to the z4m at all as bmw have already done it ! Another thing they said was that the bhp figure on beemers are usually higher than the quoted figures ! Great !

Evolve (based around Luton I think) are highly recommended for the S54 E46 M3s, if I was going to remap it that's who would get my money. According to them a healthy standard S54 makes around 320bhp by the way, definitely not the quoted 338. I think they suggest an increase of around 15bhp but the main difference seems to be the car feels smoother with more torque lower down (my Z4MC has much better lower down torque than my E46 SMG M3 which I put down to the different gearbox Z4Ms use over the E46?). I know one guy that had his E46 M3 remapped reckoned it was able to match or even occasionally beat his friend's standard E92 M3 after the remap, so there seems to be a real power gain to be had...

Markos, I'm not wanting to doubt your friends claims, but I would be astonished if an E46 M3 could equal/outrun an E92 M3 solely on the completion of a remap. Even if it made an additional 15bhp that would be nowhere near enough. The CSL i think makes only about another 17bhp IIRC, and to make that it needed new cams, airbox, Alpha N tune and a reasonable weight reduction, yet performance-wise it is still someway off an E92 M3.

I haven't had a remap, but I've heard only good things about Evolve and would consider using them
Also don't see how a remapped E46 with even circa 340-350 BHP could possibly outperform a 414 BHP car.

Yeah, fair point original guvnor, even to me it all sounds questionable, yet both owners were on m3cutters talking about it ages back... Might well have been due to driver input, one car being in the right gear/power band perhaps, but both agreed there was a genuine difference after the remap. I'll have a quick look to see if I can dig out that post...

I found that thread quick time! Was from 2010 and I think I might have confused my E46/E92s though

The OP consistently beats his friend's (standard I presume) E46 M3, though on post #21 his friend states the OPs car is "neck and neck" with a E92 DCT M3...

Long thread but interesting if you're considering a remap:
