Definitely no to alcantara - mine was flat as a pancake after about 6 months, complete waste of time!

Here is mine Mike,
Like others have said,i would steer clear of alacantara because it does have a habit of soaking up skin oil over time if not looked after and goes "flat", meaning the leather nap starts to soak up the skin oil and look more shinny. However if you clean it regularly it will last a good while. Its just the nature of the leather is more prone to soaking up natural skin oil. But it personel choice, if you look after it it will last especially of its not you daily driver.
On thickness, a double padded standard wheel is not as thick as an M wheel is standard, but in my opinion the M Wheel is too thick, more akin to a leather bound shirt button
, the standard wheel, double padded is a better more comfortable choice.
I have a spare standard e85 wheel here, and i am with Jack tomorrow for fitment of my retrimmed E89 wheel, if you like i can drop it off to him and you can use it for your retrim then just send me back your old wheel when done, if that helps, but i expect he will have a wheel you can retrim anyway as he has a garage full of wheels.

I was thinking about alcantara, but thought it might look a bit out of place and wanted more of an OEM kinda look (hence the black stitching).
That's identical to mine with black stitches to keep OEM look. one of the best value for money mods you can do IMO
