Royals steering wheel

Sorry if this is a bit of a thread high jack, but it may interest others thinking of a Royals refurb.

I am picking up an X3 for Mrs Boris next week and will likely get the wheel refurbed by royals. I know there is an option for them to send you a stock wheel, if they have one, and you swap over the paddles etc from your existing wheel and send it to them. How difficult is that swap over (like most on here I am neither an idiot nor a mechanic, somewhere in the middle). Not to mention the removal of a steering wheel with airbag?

I did it as part of a complex move of my Royal wheel from one car to another and then swap a heated version with a non heated version.

So first thing is make sure the exchange wheel has the EXACT same functionality..we discovered the hard way that the alloy casting that’s the boss is machined specifically for each option ..

You need to remove the power connection to the battery and ISOLATE the connectors..BEFORE touching the steering wheel..then do not reconnect till ALL work has been completed on the steering wheel.

Unclicking the air bag from its mounts to get access to the steering wheel but requires a knack..once you’ve got it then your fine..we incurred some damage to the steering bossplastic moulding as a result of not having the ‘knack’..

When I did mine I had bought a M Sport steering wheel with the newer style paddles and sent that away to Royals (and then sold the old steering wheel when the refurbed one arrived). I watched this video (for the Z4) and found it useful: https://youtu.be/jgnPs4RMUJk I had the steering wheel off in 5 minutes, hopefully it will be similar on the X3
