Rough idle/ sucking noise

I have a 2003 z4 convertible. I've had it 6 months, daily driver and never a issue. Noticed last few days ac was not that cold so my husband was just suppose to add freon. However he decided to check the oil, and removed the air filter to knock dust out of it as we live on dirt road, and he removed the cap of the port to add freon...that is all he touched yet when I went to crank it to turn ac on for freon add it didn't want to crank and when it did it idles so rough and rpm gauge jumping. Never got to freon due to this but can't figure out what happened. We've took filter out and put it back 4 times to make sure it's correct aa

Definitely sounds like an air leak, so keep checking round all the inlet pipes. Maybe a connection has moved a little.
Also check the small ridged pipe that goes into the top of the throttle housing as that is prone to splitting and an be hard to spot

Sounds like an air leak on the intake side, if you have been moving the air filter box it may have disturbed the intake boot after the Maf which is prone to getting splits in it. Give it a good visual check for splits that may have developed unmetered air getting in after the Maf is the usual cause of what you are experiencing. A smoke test will pinpoint any leaks you cant find visually.
