Rough idle and injector cleaner

There's a design flaw with N54 injectors. There's multiple revisions and only the latter two, versions 11 and 12 are actually reliable.

Having a late 2016 car that’s the best news I’ve had all day

That's the benefit of buying later. By the time your car left the production line that engine was 10 years old so you probably have the most reliable variant of the E89.

I think the only downside of later cars is that extra pedestrian safety kit they installed in the front.

No amount of cleaning or magic fluid in the fuel tank is going to fix them.
So if there is a design flaw, why weren't these included in any recall?

I presume they can be taken out and cleaned as the apparent cost of replacement is eye watering ?

Probably because of the same reasons they haven’t acknowledged the cracked wheel problem either.

Just asked BMW UK the question. Not expecting anything positive but doesn't cost anything to ask.

I don't think it's a case of them getting dirty as the fix was an injector design change. I think it's more likely the issue is accelerated component wear or a weakness which causes the injectors to eventually leak.

The injector issue is a common talking point. Some people choose to fit reconditioned injectors to save a little money but those same people seem to still end up replacing all 6 injectors with new ones due to issues. The price of new injectors and the replacement procedure has fallen over the years, may be worth getting a quote from an independent garage if the dealer doesn't give goodwill.

There was a recall in the USA but not here.

Well got a response back from BMW which was as expected jus a bland no your vehicle has not been subject of a recall for dodgy fuel injectors.

If there's a design flaw with N54 injectors and there's multiple versions, how do you find out which version is fitted?

If you need replacements just get the latest revision number, what’s fitted now shouldn’t really matter? :?

It's written on the top part of the injector, not sure if visible without removing them though.

Here's a pic, the revision number comes after the part number in the top right. These are revision 12.

Thanks but I was just going to try and find out which ones were fitted to mine and if they are the same as ones already subject to recall in other models or in the USA.

If they were I was going to put the question to BMW that if they were faulty in the USA how are they not faulty here?

It’s due to group action in the USA, you’ve not got a snowflake in hells chance of bmw granting the same concession over here in the uk

Brutal ..could you not sugar coat it?

As an aside bought some Redex at Lidl today....expecting another 5 bhp at least..

Thanks Guys,

Just sent them a response that I was not happy about the issue and left it at that. At some point in the future if they do a recall then at least I have registered my displeasure and would then take legal action to recover what I am no doubt about to spend on new injectors. Unlikely but you never know.

PS. Not happy with the pics of the Atacama zed. Want one that's newer than my 2014 35is, but don't think there is one out there. :x

2013 was the last model year for Atacama Yellow...very few 35i 35is were made for the UK market....also not many were ‘fully loaded’ ..I guess cause the retail price premium of the 35’s...

Maybe a re-spray...about £3,000?

I have resigned myself to having to replace the injectors and my Indy mechanic reckons circa £200 per injector for index 12 and says he wouldn’t recommend fitting anything other than genuine new ones. Apparently there are cheaper ones which turn out to be refurbished. Now waiting for a price but in the mean time, anyone purchased these recently and can recommend where to get them.

Don’t think the yellow would match the orange leather trim inside :o :o

Getting new injectors fitted tomorrow by my local Indy. Not sure of final price as he said he would search for best price for genuine BMW injectors so expecting circa £200 each plus fitting which he says is not a big job. Not cheap but it has to be done so hope it fixes the problem and the old girl is back to peak performance.

Injectors: 1353 8648937-12 is the latest index 12 injector and seem reliable. They were £102 ech from a main dealer as of Jan 2018, but typically these were only used for warranty work and BMW will want to retail part number 1353 8616079-12 which is exactly the same but with a £240 price tag.
