Rough Idle and a squeaky whining sound

Cut a long story short, a couple of weeks ago when it was very cold, my normally decent E86 got taken 3 miles. It was idling really really rough, and when I got to the destination it started making quite a loud squeaky, squeally whining sound until I turned the engine off. Three hours later, fingers crossed, I drove it home again... much better, only slightly rough idle, no whining noise.

I've been a bit reluctant to get in it again, but after a big of googling I checked the oil filter wasn't disintegrating and gave her a bit of run yesterday and it seems to be running fine again.

Any thoughts? Did I experience the first signs of a problem that's going to recur? Or did it just not like one of the coldest days of the winter so far and play up a bit as a one off?

Aux belt ok?

No idea but thanks for the idea. Will research and take a look.

FWIW I've done two more 10 mile trips today and no issues whatsoever! Hoping it was just a dislike of a short frozen journey. Saying that my main issues are now with my 2006 330i which (yesterday) threw up about 8000 error messages, juddered, power steering stopped working temporarily, stalled and only just got me back home (I turned around a mile from my drive!) This maybe not the correct forum, but I guess the issues are similar between two BMWs of the same year and engine.
